Hypothetical scenario in VikasRao ’s Draconology Universe.

Far away in the middle of the ocean, a Megalodon measuring over 15 meters (over 50 feet) long and weighing in at around 50 tons, had just struck from below a baleine whale twice her mass!

Generally targeting the caudal pendacles on these specific cetaceans (or just the tail fluke directly), the megatoothed shark should have normally delivered the killing blow upon her prey before simply waiting out for them to die of blood loss. This whales however is too large and still has enough strength to fight back against his attacker.

Realizing that the wait is taking too long, the shark prepares herself for another strike at her target’s weak spot, as a means to hasten her prey’s death. Usually she shouldn’t have to rush herself into ending the life of her prey so hastily, after all she is recorded to be the largest apex macro predator in Earth’s history. However, in this universe, even the Meg has logical reasons to be concerned.

Her reasons for concern begin to reveal itself in the form of a pod of four orca. Although smaller, the killer whales were faster, smarter and coordinate in larger numbers, as they start to mob the Meg with disorienting sonar pulses as well as light ramming into her gills and nipping at her fins. The pod have made it clear that they are simply here for the dying baleine whale, as they attempt to repel the Meg from her kill. Yet just four orca alone is not quite enough to deliver the message, as the giant shark tries to hold her own, sending her signals to the assailants that she will not back down by bumping into them and nipping back at them.

However, the Meg sensed a more dangerous intruder, realizing that the orca are little more than a mere diversion to expose her to what is yet to come. Quickly changing her objective from defending her kill to retreat, the shark turns around and swims downwards towards the abyss as the harassing orca resume chasing her.

She made the correct choice! As suddenly, from right behind her, a large raptorial toothed cetacean, a fully grown bull Devil Whale (Deinophyseter serpentoctonus) measuring at 13 meters (over 40 feet) long, rammed his snout right into the gills of the retreating shark! Upon impact, clouds of blood leaked into the water like ink from her gills! Yet the damage was only minor due to her speed lessening the effect of the Devil Whale’s charge. Regardless, the Devil Whale was the one that rallied the orca to gang up on the shark and his assault was a clear message that the Meg’s kill was not worth fighting for against the combined might of teamwork and raw aggression!

Humbled yet with only a few minor wounds, the Megalodon successfully leaves her assailants behind to recover in the depths.

Victorious, the Devil Whale and the orca claim their spoils, as they leap onto the baleine whale’s blowhole to drown him to death, before eating only the tongue and any other soft interiors before leaving the rest of the carcasse to the scavengers.

Eventually the Megalodon had recovered from her injuries, as she rises up from the depths to claim what she values most from the whale she hunted, that being the rich fatty blubber.

It just goes to show that nothing in the ecosystem reigns absolute supreme.
