Description
I drew this deep in the throes of being very sick, so I'm not 100% sure what was going on in my artistic brain, and yet it appeals to me greatly. Let's load up the headcamel!
Yan Longclaw (not pictured) was a knight who sold out his compatriots and went rogue. If that wasn't lousy enough, he dumped his infant child in an orphanage with express intent of coming back for her when he felt like playing happy families, which he never did. Yunan was so called for the old Newtopian word for "nameless" (a common orphan name along the lines of Jane Doe). Legally unable to allow a family to adopt her, the orphanage kept Yunan until she aged out. Having no other options in life, Yunan became a peasant soldier in the Newtopian army.
While training on the castle grounds, Cadet Yunan became friends (and eventually sweethearts) with Olivia, the heir of Lady Alena, King Andrias's majordomo. Alena tried to protect her daughter's heart, quietly insisting that the army's foot soldiers are sent to the sands to die as meat shields for the king's expensive robot brigade. Unfortunately, Olivia and Yunan were too young and inexperienced to stop the heinous inevitability of circumstances. On the evening of her soldier's departure, Olivia gave Yunan her token (a Soprano Purple daisy) and implored her to return safely someday. This would inspire Yunan not only to survive her certain doom, but to excel at all challenges and power her way up the ranks of the army, so that she might deserve the love of her beautiful friend.
Yunan is on the right track to begin with. She's good at fighting and enjoys the thrill of a brawl, and has already earned a blade as opposed to being a mere pike newt. Raw talent plus inspiration plus motivation and all that. You may wonder why Yunan never changed her name from "nameless"; it's a matter of re-appropriating a slur. What once they weaponized to keep us in our place, we now wear as a badge of honor. Also, Olivia knew her by that name, and Yunan wanted to make sure she'd be recognized every step of the way.
Olivia's mount was inspired by a sea cucumber, and Luvdisc, and Birdo (and cold medicine). It might be one of the kooky creatures from the catacombs. It reproduces parthenogenetically via eggs it lays from its mouth (but only if it broods; most of its eggs are edible, if you fancy). It eats via suction. Its name is Tiptoe. It is a good...pink...thing.
