Sky couldn't ride the young stryx. Not yet, at least. The male was overweight, in her opinion, and the female much too small. Neither had been chosen for riding stryx, of course. They weren't Sky's Stryx. They were Hol Dovah's new flock and family. Since finishing his training, Hol had been stuck to Sky's side like glue, too eager to fly with company and show off to bother letting her get any work done around the ranch. So, she found something new for the bored tyto to tend to.
She brought home a pair of juveniles, and without room for any argument, set them up as Hol's new apprentices. He would be tasked with training the pair and having them attend their tributes, and once he could prove to be a stable flight lead, she'd see about something new that he'd actually enjoy to pass the time, assuming he had the time for it.
And so began an interesting dynamic.
Hol Dovah had taken the pair up for their Daius Tribute; a race across the island at dawn, just as he'd done with Sky those years ago. Hol, being larger and broader of wing, kept a steadier pace ahead of the pair for most of the warm-up lap. During the twenty minutes it took to make the loop, he began to learn more about his new students and their... behaviors and quirks.
Alyosha, the young male, wasn't as bad as he'd first seemed. His attention was everywhere, though, and though the youngster zipped through the island's many obstacles with ease already, there were a few times that Hol had to call the teenager back onto the correct flightpath. Of course, Aly seemed unphased by the scoldings, merrily falling back into place for at least a few minutes of tried concentration, before once again spotting something of interest below and swooping off to investigate.
A bit spacey, Hol decided, but with energy like that, he honestly couldn't complain. Alyosha could make a good wing bird with those keen and curious eyes of his.
Tobias on the other hand...
The girl was a menace. From day one, when Sky'd first brought her home to the ranch, she'd proven to be more than just a thorn in Hol's side. He'd lost at least an ounce of plumage to her boundary-testing pecks and pluckings, but the little runt was too quick for the older stryx to chase down each time. By the time he'd turned to bite back, she'd be half-way up the rafters in the barn, spooking the horses and cackling in a way Hol deemed quite unbecoming of a lady indeed.
So of course, the entire lap, she wouldn't stray far- but certainly not into view- from the leading male. The darker lady of nocturnal blood would swing around in wide circles and loops, careening in from time to time to peck or jab or kick at Hol's head and back, not enough to really hurt but just enough to test his patience.
As they rounded the island for a final time, Hol called the pair together, grateful that this time, Tobias fell into sight alongside her foster brother.
This was it. The big moment. Their dawning race. The three hovered for a moment, understanding each other before Hol turned to fly ahead, leaving the pair to hover in place.
This would be a flying start. Neither of the young stryxes were very good at taking off yet. Hol would be the starting line, perched in a tree that towered above the rest as a living, watching landmark and judge.
Tobias broke from position.
He barely heard the shift of feathers on the breeze before she suddenly dove in from above and Hol felt the sharp pain of yet another peck atop his skull.
Well that done did it.
Tobias and Alyosha managed to get through their tribute that morning; in a perfect single file like, with Tobias fleeing in front, Hol enraged in the center giving chase and Alyosha happily following behind, bemused but at least, no longer distracted.
