Description Well, for the most part, this is finished. I'll no doubt end up going back in and tweeking it later (usually do on charcoal pieces that aren't on commission) But I'm rather happy with the stage I've reached here for the moment. For those who don't know, this is blues singer Stevie Ray Vaughan, titled after a rather fun song of his, " Rude Mood." This image itself is a digital photo of a vine\compressed charcoal drawing that is nearlly 3 x 5 feet in size. The original image of Stevie is referenced from a photo from the inside of the "Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Stevie Ray Vaughan" CD booklet. (Excellent CD, btw.) That photo, (which, in high contrast to the 3x5 foot drawing was only about 1x 2 inches in size) obviously, is copyright its respectful owner.

Cheers,
Mel

This is an awesome piece of art!

I have one question, what's in his mouth?

(I'm a bit blind)

I absolutly love traditional artwork. This is beautiful. The shading is wonderful, and I love the huge amount of detail and characteristics put into the face. Even the clothes are well done. Beautiful artwork!

heheh. It's deffinately not easy! But I really love the medium. It's MESSY and the materials you can really get into, smudge and generally make a mess with are always quite entertaining to use. And annoy clean-fanatics like my mom with finger smudges and messy rooms. Which, consequently, is also a rather amusing plus. heh.

Mel

Ohhh, CHARCOAL. I love working with charcoal. I can't say I can use them as well as you.. but I enjoy them, and do pretty well.

I need to take pictures of the things I did in art class. They're too big to fit on my scanner. :/ WHICH IS BROKEN ANYWAY *wail*

Ahem. ANYWAY. Every nuance of the face was caught perfectly. Love the range of tones, from the blackest black to the whitest white. Beautiful.

It's really amazing what your hands can do, isn't it? I mean, this is absolutely gasp-worthy!!

Are you going to sell it? It could go for quite a lot... I don't know, some artists have a thing with selling their art. And I don't mean to imply that you did this for money. But it could go for quite a lot!

And of course, good job on this. I'm absolutely in love with the eyes.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MxfitForge In reply to jinxd89 [2003-10-19 21:37:17 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I am considering selling it - I'm jobless at the moment and am positively broke. Just gotta figure out how to go about selling it (or moreover, who to. I might be phoning up some local blues bars in the near future and see if I can poke their interest. bweheheh.) But we'll see. Hopefully I can get *something* out of it.

Cheers,
Mel

abyschan [2003-10-19 17:46:49 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's an incredible job you did there!! What kind of charcoal and paper did you use? My guess is the normal pencil type, medium, with a bit of vine charcoal for the background on some purchased bristol..... but I could be wrong.

I say keep it as it is. It's perfect.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MxfitForge In reply to abyschan [2003-10-19 21:47:10 +0000 UTC]

Squee, thank you much, abyschan! The actual paper uded was this huge piece of matte board (the back of which is black and has a couple of aimless Conte scribbles of Sabretooth and Kayo on it, oddly enough) That had suffered much abuse in the trunk of my car during college last semester. Its surface was all scraped and banged up.... which actually did wonders for the application of the charcoal. Alot of the detail was lost in the digicam photo, but I went in and physically roughened up the surface more myself, as well as tried to imitate and accentuate the worn appearence with the charcoal. Material experimentation ees fuuuun. *glee!* There was actually a load of vine charcoal used here, in the shirt, face and background. It served as an excellent first layer to build off of with the charcoal pencils (hard, medium and soft leads.) Good call on the materials. And thank you much for the feedback and kind words!

Take care,
Mel

Excellent render. I'm impressed! Had the chance to go to his second-to-last concert (in Kalamazoo, MI) but had other things going on and said to myself "I'll catch him the next time he's in town." I still kick myself in the ass for that. The music world lost one of its greatest assets when he left us. Glad to see you honor him.

A finished product that doesn't disappoint. I need to go find that CD. You even got the sun-kisses, those " wrinkles" where the skin earns a special texture. And the nose looks -- is it possible? -- even more bite-me-I'm-lovable.

Q: how do you handle the hair? Certain texture patterns or more individually?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MxfitForge In reply to dreor [2003-10-19 22:01:52 +0000 UTC]

lol, honestly, I don't really handle the charcoal in any set way... I just have a go at it and keep squiggling away till I figure out what works. Mostly medium chacoal pencil, and the occassional earasing for the sake of highlights was used for the hair here, but there really was no mode of opperation... just experimental scribblage. (One of the core reasons my former college professors and I did not get on well. They insisted I should have a set system to how I do these things... I prefer complete artistic chaos. LOL. Defyin' the system, baby! WHOO! *boogies!*)

Squee! Thanks so much for the nice comments, I'm flattered! And I'm glad you like the nose! I'm particularly fond of that too.

Take care,
Mel
