Description
The Longest Journey...
Part 11: A journal entry…
(By Myaskill)
23rd of December -54
"… Met with the lord of Karaffa, Salim, today. Seemed like an honest man, although a bit ill posed towards strangers suddenly penetrating all of his defenses.
Well, who wouldn't be?
I told him about everything that has happened to us since we left port in Britain. He seemed to believe my story, he even told me to seek out the monks in the Temple of Camalus, whatever that is.
Think I'm going to check it out. That'll be the first thing tomorrow, I'll ask Narenu to join me.
She'll probably like that. Getting off the ship (for the first time?), I mean.
We'll start repairs on the ship as soon as we can, IF the repair crew thinks it's possible.
Well, she's kept together thus far, so why wouldn't it be possible.
Anyway, to other things…"
"Are you going to stay up all night, Marcus?"
"No, sweetheart, just finishing up now." Marcus answered over his shoulder and hurriedly scribbled;
"Never mind, I'll continue as soon as possible. "
"There, done. Time to get to bed, hm?" he said, as he blew out the candle and turned.
His heart skipped a beat.
" Well this will be an interesting night " he thought as he started undressing.
…
"Do I want to go into the city with you?" Narenu asked as if Marcus were joking.
They sat in the galley, next to Corin, eating and talking.
Corin looked another way while eating with as much sound as he could make, trying his best to pretend he didn't hear their conversation.
"Well, yes, I think we should both go and see what there is around here; learn as much as we can, and… What?" he asked; Narenu was holding her hands over her face, but he could hear her giggling and snorting.
"Nothing," she said as she finally managed to pull herself together, "I'd love to come with you."
…
"What was that about?" Marcus asked as he and Narenu walked the streets of Karaffa hand-in-hand.
"Nothing," she repeated, "That's just it. You didn't hear what I thought, I closed everything out!"
"You can do that? Show me!"
"I don't know how to… I just stumbled upon it by chance." She looked thoughtful for a moment, "OK, concentrate on something really simple and let that be the only thing in your mind. Clear everything else from your mind."
"OK"
After a while he settled on reciting the lullaby his mother had always sung to him when he was a kid.
"The rose look up,
Up to the sky
Opening its leaves
As it blossoms
For the day to come
Sunshine on the rose
Gives it strength to stand
Forever this union lasts
As a darkness passes by
Steps on the rose
The rose been shattered
Gives out a seed
The seed 'merges from it
And grows into a rose
More beautiful than the last
As the darkness returns
It stands in envy, watching
The most beautiful rose in the field"
"Beautiful. And I heard nothing else from you. Don't do that again. I felt kind of uncomfortable without your thoughts in my head"
"Okay."
…
"Welcome, children, to the Temple of Camalus. May He look upon you and bring you victory."
The Temple was so incredibly large and so richly decorated that Marcus just stood there staring at it.
"Thank you, we were told to come to seek you out," Narenu answered the monk.
They were standing on the doorsteps to this magnificent building, the Temple of Camalus. The building was made up of a tower and a circular building around with courtyards between the two. The circular building was twice the size of any fortress Marcus had ever seen, and the tower was taller than he could see. And still this was only a small building compared to Salims palace!
"Marcus. Snap out of it, people are beginning to stare"
Narenus thoughts cut into his mind like a sharp knife.
"Indeed? Then you must be the two the Grand-Master has been expecting all day. Do come in. Watch the step. Please follow me to the Grand-Master, will you?"
As they walked through the doors, minding the steps and subsequently still tripping on it, Marcus couldn't help but feel a sense of delight…
