A close-up of Lucky II, the mantis who is taking care of our summer sweet.It's time to start thinking about getting a macro lens. All previous shots of Lucky II were taken with my kit lens. I put the telephoto on to see how much better it would turn out and this was my result. Still could be more detailed, but it's the best I can do with my equipment!

Wow, I was surprised to learn that this wasn't a macro photograph. It is an incredible close-up photograph none the less. You have some wonderful clarity and detail in this shot! I like how you captured his "pose" as well. Very nice framing.

Oh okay- red your statement to the image clearly again. i am using also a kit lense and have to say that it's harder work then with a usual macro lens - but the results are nearly the same i think.

I've seen insect photos that are so crisp where you can actually see the detail from the compound eyes - if I was able to do this, you would have been able to see my focus better
This one was actually taken with a telephoto lens (it turned out better results than the kit lens), so standing about 3 feet away from my subject was difficult!!!

Ouh yes ok. Thats true. With my kitlens for macro i have to be centimeters away from the object - that hard too

That's why I'm looking at the Canon 100mm macro lens - I hope the longer focal length helps!

Nah, I could get way better detail than this - I see photos of these guys where the detail is so great, you can see the texture on their eyes!!!
