Description "The Keepers were training me to be one of them... but I found other uses for those skills."

Well, this happened. : o

For a long time I had problems with drawing old-looking male faces, and often my Garrett looked way too young for my taste. However, this time I actually wanted to paint young Garrett, just after he left the Keepers to be precise.

So, here's our young and daring thief on a rainy night, smiling despite probably being all wet and cold. I don't know why exactly he left the Keepers (I do have a theory though), but I'm pretty sure that Garrett, arrogant and full of confidence, felt contented and free as he was his own master again.

OH MY GOSH! You are awesome!
He left the keepers probably because he know how risky are the work of the keepers... remember the sufferings that they count in his books in the lost city or in the cave before to get to the Opera House.
Garrett is a stronghead thief, and he just want to be alone and make his own life of thievery without commitments, without keepers, without thieves guild, pagans or hammers.

Thank you very much!

I agree with what you said about Garrett's nature -- he's a stubborn man who wants to stay independent, and who lets no man nor society decide his duties or responsibilities. Garrett's only master is Garrett himself.

Yes! and that is the reason he's my favourite character in the game, he's a solitaire guy who hate to take orders from someone xD.
Well, good work, i wish i could draw like you
and i send you greetings!

Cool drawingt, Garrett as we know him. From the title the first thing that came to mind was this song:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlfNmf…

Wonder if it fits the mood you had when drawing the picture.

Thanks!

That's a cool song! I like to listen instrumental pieces like that when doing backgrounds, but for some reason I tend to listen this Norwegian band Gothminister (along with Thief soundtracks) when drawing Garrett, especially this  song. At times their industrial metal sound reminds me of the intro & credits of The Dark Project, and, well, dark and aggressive music fits dark and aggressive character.

Same here, songs really get me in the mood when drawing. And thanks for the link, that sounds great, I always enjoyed Thief audio aswell and that really has a similar feel to it, only more futuristic - if they ever to a Thief version about one of his descendants, either genetically or in spirit, set in a pseudo-cyberpunk-fantasy future of the world this would be perfect.
Shame Subway to Sally wandered off into a more metal direction, their older songs had alot of Thief atmosphere, and the german dub artist sounded alot like the lead singer

It reminds me a bit of one of the first pieces I saw from you, funny enough. This one if I recall :>.

You've grown so much as an artist - this is excellent! The moody shadows are always perfect for the setting, and you use them so well to help sculpt Garrett's face no matter what age he is :>.

P.S. When I went to your homepage to get to your gallery, I JUST noticed the skeleton with the maid hat. YOU WIN THE INTERNET. xD !

I can indeed see a huge difference when I compare the two pictures! Seeing all this progress makes me really happy!

Well, well, this is pretty awesome. What is your theory?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyEpicRilla In reply to Bazzkorg [2017-01-22 01:08:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Well, I think that Garrett never really respected the ways of the Keepers. He was picked up old enough to understand to question the reasons. I mean, he had been picking pockets and running messages and so for years already. He had learnt that life wasn't easy, and that the world is a cruel place. I think that he didn't like the fact that the Keepers had all that knowledge in their possession, but no intention nor interest to use it "right." Why he had to suffer so much as a young boy - why there was such unfairness, corruption and poverty within the society in general? -, when there were people with knowledge and ability (i.e. magical glyphs and all) to help those in need, those like him? I think that he found the protocol of the Keepers very cold and cruel, as they refrained from any interference with the surrounding society -- and Garrett, who had experienced poverty and the unfairness of the system, probably enjoyed the thought of interfering, like teaching a lesson to corrupt nobles and greedy crime lords. So, there was some bitterness and fiery temper of a young man involved too.

tl;dr: Garrett got tired of their bullshit, and thus left the organization.

Bazzkorg In reply to MyEpicRilla [2017-01-22 21:14:23 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, perhaps this is true. It's an interesting theory, and fits with him leaving for anger the greater folly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyEpicRilla In reply to Bazzkorg [2017-01-22 21:46:19 +0000 UTC]

It was the most convincing theory that I could come up with, without knowing any more details (like his relationships to other Keepers or their plans regarding to him). It sounds pretty believable to me how living with the Keepers could have influenced his personal moral views and making him the man he is, so I'll stick to this theory until I run into a better one.

you're welcome ^^ I think you do an awesome job at it, love how accurate it is to the few times his attire was somewhat visible in the cut-scenes and cover art ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyEpicRilla In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2017-01-19 22:35:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, I mostly use these two (1 & 2 ) pictures as references when I draw his clothes, so I think it's a mix of those. xD I don't know, the main character from Thi4f has so... distinctive attire, that I kinda feel the need to be as faithful to ol' Garrett's design as possible. Of course some details may vary on my pictures, but I refuse to believe that he only has one outfit in his wardrobe. xDD

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to MyEpicRilla [2017-01-20 13:40:06 +0000 UTC]

Ah nice I haven't seen the second picture before, very good for seeing what his cloves look like ^^
yes indeed that's how I felt about it too, stay as true to the character's look as possible : D is a bit hard when his appearance isn't completely consistent you do an awesome job though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyEpicRilla In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2017-01-20 14:28:12 +0000 UTC]

True, his appearance isn't the most consistent one. Garrett is a man of thousand faces... And yeah, his eye colour doesn't seem to be that consistent either. It's definitely blue, but its shade changes, and apparently they used the same brown eye texture for Garrett's player model in DS that the brown eyed AI's use. However, his eye is still blue in the last cutscene of DS.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to MyEpicRilla [2017-01-20 14:45:58 +0000 UTC]

yeah indeed it isn't :'D luckily there are still some features consistent, it's a matter of filtering those out I guess :'D
idd, I remember seeing him with brown eyes too, personally think the blue suits him better I think, it indeed literally changes within the same game ah I wish we could have a proper thief 4 and see the epic style really come to life...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyEpicRilla In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2017-01-20 15:02:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that would be awesome. But I don't believe we will ever get proper Thief 4.  Personally though, I think that DS gave a good ending to the series, and the future of Garrett was left for the players to imagine, which I appreciate very much.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to MyEpicRilla [2017-01-20 15:18:13 +0000 UTC]

for sure... I think the series can be declared dead at this point D:  at least the community isn't so maybe something will come out of there. at least they won't make a sequel to that awful remake right...RIGHT??

yeah indeed it did. could have been a bit better but it worked out well and fitted the mysterious tone of the series. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyEpicRilla In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2017-01-20 15:34:13 +0000 UTC]

The series may be finished, but the community certainly isn't dead! Those taffers at TTLG forums are still making fan missions, and still after 18 years new people are getting into the fandom. And I'm not going to stop spamming Thief for a long time either.

Sure, the ending of DS could have been better, but it was good nonetheless. I'm not that excited about Garrett taking an apprentice after DS, but hey, it was never confirmed, so I can imagine he didn't. XD

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to MyEpicRilla [2017-01-21 20:23:25 +0000 UTC]

yes indeed more epic arts oew I haven't been on there before I think, might check it out I haven't played any mods for thief yet, did look at a let's play of that huge fan campaign mod Shadows of the metal age. been hearing a lot about the dark mod too.. but I probably replay the vanilla games at some point ^^

I'm quite new to thief, discovered it only a few years ago when the games were already considered acient, but they hold up sooooo well when you get past the dated graphics :'D people saying it's only good cause people are blinded by nostalgia are wrong

yup I agree ^^ yeah it would be quite a big thing for Garret to have an apprentice, since he's such a loner selfish dude most of the time

MyEpicRilla In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2017-01-21 21:20:53 +0000 UTC]

Some of the fan missions are absolutely brilliant and beat some of the original missions 100-0. If you ever decide to try them, I'd recommend skacky's missions "Between These Dark Walls" and "Endless Rain" (<-- that's so freaking good I play it again time to time just for the atmosphere and climbing and rain  ) or campaign called "Gems of Provenance" by StinkyKitty. They're all for Thief Gold, but there's tons of FMs more for Thief 2 out there. And if you enjoy Let's Play videos, well, FenPhoenix plays Thief and Dark Mod missions on his channel, and there's new video almost every day. There are some other Thief let's players too (like Klatremus and Nexus Letum), but Fen is my personal favourite. :3

I discovered Thief a few years ago too! I'd say, 4 or 5 years ago..? Have been practically living in The City since then. I started to play FMs only like 2 years ago though, and I still haven't played Thief 2X (I know, shame on me). I've played some The Dark Mod missions too, but I kinda prefer Thief FMs. The movement in TDM feels really heavy for some reason. P: However, I love it how you can climb basically anywhere in TDM!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to MyEpicRilla [2017-01-21 21:36:40 +0000 UTC]

yeah that's what I have been hearing as well, that some of the fanmade missions are even better then the originals that's setting the bar really high for me  thank you for the recommendations! gonna check them out sometime when I pick up playing thief again ^^ I'm usually one to go for story mods, I remember playing a lot of those for morrowind ^^
ooh I think FenPhoenix was the one i watched the let's play of! very entertaining indeed, love the way he read all the letters from the game

ah so you're a relatively new fan too! just shows how well these games hold up I remember being completely obsessed with the games when I first played them, luckily it has worn off a little to normal fan status XD
oh heavy movement? that sounds quite bad since the vanilla controls are already not the quickest O.o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyEpicRilla In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2017-01-21 22:23:46 +0000 UTC]

There are even some horror themed FMs out there, like "A Night in Rocksbourg" series (which is like Silent Hill meets Thief), "A Better Tomorrow", "Coaxing The Spirit" and "Eclipsed"... Haven't played those myself, but I've seen them and it's enough for me. XD Maybe some day...

Yeah, heavy movement. Garrett feels as light as a little fairy compared to the character in TDM. To me it feels like I'm actually controlling a grown up man. The difficulty is also higher in TDM (the guards are way more sensitive and if you pick a fight, you're dead. You know, Thief doesn't encourage fighting -- TDM punishes for it), because they try to make it as realistic as possible. I still play TDM when I want a good challenge, but the whole experience is kind of overwhelming so I'm not doing it often.

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to MyEpicRilla [2017-01-21 22:41:29 +0000 UTC]

oooh that sounds interesting as long as they don't have the heart attack jump scares, those are just annoying af.. hopefully they follow the good example thief has set silent hill meets thief, sounds like my kind of thing : D

pff wow that's something O.o I wonder if the guard circling still works in TDM. ah I do really hate slow controlling characters, it really sucks the fun out of it for me, especially when my lazy ass is faster in real life
