Description
Culloden House is a Georgian Mansion. Originally, there was a much bigger 16th-century castle here. In 1625, Duncan Forbes, a wealthy merchant, purchased this castle plus lands from the Macintosh chieftain and set up residence as laird.
The 5th laird. also called Duncan, is fondly remembered here, the local school is named after him. He was University educated and sat in Parliament.
Wise and persuasive, he convinced some powerful chiefs not to join the 1745 Jacobite uprising. Sir Walter Scott described him as a "distinguished Scotsman who, by his efforts, saved the Hanoverian throne."
Duncan was, however, appalled by the persecutions after the battle and helped some Highlanders escape. The king did not take kindly to this and withheld payments.
The castle had been severely damaged, and Duncan died 2 years later, some say of a broken heart.
His son John rebuilt the current much smaller house by keeping the inner walls, but removing the outer castle fortifications.
