Description Unsure, because I was absolutely unsure of what was happening.

All I knew, was what I saw. A very large group of Hasidic Jewish men, clapping, singing and dancing on the sidewalk in front of some new-age psychic/psychotic shop.

It seemed like a celebration, but I can not be sure. It almost seemed like a rally against the shop it's self. I don't know...

This was such a rushed shot. I was being pushed forward by a crowd, so i just kept my camera settings and shot one frame. After first developing it I did not like it. It wasn't what I had in mind at all for the shot, but it grew on me.

I've been meaning to show this one for a while.

Infos

Canon AE-1 ~ 50mm 1.4 ~ Kodak 400 BW c-41 neg scan.

The Hasidic jews are unnecessary nuisances. They don't hold jobs but rather study the Talhmud all day. I'd say BURN this book.

They also won't pay real estate tax in Ramapo & Mahwah, They made every home a synagogue and the town is wanting for funds.

They also are sternly anti-birth control. Ten children/ family and the bearded father is on welfare, studying the talhmud.

The Hasidic fanatics have NO right to try to shove their religion on other Jews.

If I were God, I would impose total & permanent sterility on all Hasidics and Orthodox. Unborn children would be born, but be themselves sterile. The sterility would also be imposed on any they adopt, and be lifted if they convert to conservative Judaism, Christianity or atheism.

BUT there's no God and no miracles or judgements...

"Hassidic religion" is judaism itself, well, it was the only type of judaism that existed 300 years ago, much before the "reformis" came and defaced the jewish religion.

With an average of 10 children in a family (no birth control allowed !) ,and men choosing to study the Tahmud all day every day instead of getting jobs (going on welfare !), the Hasidics are making themselves preposterous nuisances ! Their religion blocks & checks them 6 ways from Sunday ! Magazines and papers should warn Jews from considering joining them.

Likewise warn against Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, Adventists, Armstrongism, and any other OneTrueChurch that won't let adherants live normal lives.

Dude, I'm actually Chassidic, the families have 10 children because it's an a Mitzvah d'Oraita, that means that it's a good deed to have a lot of children. Also, I also would love to study the talmud

I really like how the boy behind them is crystal clear. It's almost as if the photo is really about him, even though he's only 1/20th of the frame.

The look on his face is almost as if he's stuck between laughing, and admiring. Like he wants to laugh, because that's what anyone his age might do, but he can't help but watch and admire these men celebrating their religion for the world to see.

MacNapier [2007-01-06 14:03:35 +0000 UTC]

The holiday the men were celebrating on South Street, Philadelphia is called "Simchat Torah", a joyous holiday to remember when God gave the Torah (old testament/five books of Moses) to the people of ancient Israel.
Now you know!

Moses was an Egyptian and did not do anything.
The Pentateuch is totally mythical. Its rules are man-made.

Considering the fact that you've taken this shot in October may point that this celebration had somthing to do with the Jewish holidays taking place during that time, that's why the second man from the right is holding a Torah scroll.

I have no idea what is the "psychic/psychotic shop" all about, but i can guess that it might be selling all kind of ritual objects (?).

That kid on the back might be a "reflection" of you in some way, because he also had no idea what the hell was going on.

JadeIshTehRingLeader [2007-01-06 11:04:03 +0000 UTC]

I like it. It makes the whole area look very mysterious. The kid in the back is kinda cute. I LOVE the focus. Reminds me of those crazy shots in movies or TV shows where the main focus is in the way back and the people are in front to add the idea that it's crowded around. O_O

I can see why it has grown on you.
It works because you can tell that it wasn't perfectly shot as you would have intended. The moment itself is captured more truely like this regardless.
Looking foward to getting my kodak c-41 bw developed now - looks good

i'm glad you chose to post this one. i like that the focus is on that kid, even though unintended. that guys passing glance at you is great too. what the hell is going on in the bottom left corner though? how is that person there/in focus? it's distracting...

I like the fact the skater kid is one of the focus's in this shot.. just goes to show the difference between culture, or if infact he does follow them, the difference between the young and the traditional..
