Being inspired by this passage from "The Fall of Gondolin":
"...Then said he to his mother: "Mother Idril, I would we had good Ecthelion of the Fountain here to play to me on his flute, or make me willow-whistles! Perchance he has gone on ahead?" But Idril said nay, and told what she had heard of his end. Then said Eärendil that he cared not ever to see the streets of Gondolin again, and he wept bitterly..."
I've imagined Eärendil's happy childhood in Gondolin with Ecthelion and willow whistles...

ohhh... that was such a short paragraph in that chapter but it left me so sad. I'm so glad you took the time to create this window into the closeness between these two. I think what made it so sad is you don't normally see elf children in such grief and Tolkein helped you get attached to characters too quickly.

It's possible that Eärendil grew up such a wonderful person, because he was close to Ecthelion in childhood ...

Just doing by Earendil's comments about Ecthelion can see that Ecthelion was a real comfort to him in gondolin. It's very easy to imagine Earendil. becoming the courageous and beautiful Souled person he became because of knowing Ecthelion.
I think Tolkien mentions that Ecthelion was very loved in gondolin.

It's a rare thing, but Tolkien's positive characters are not similar. Each of them is special. And Ecthelion - another weakness of mine in this story - as well

That's what I love about Tolkien is that all of his heroes are not poster board cutouts. They're all individual and it was fascinating to me that he could create this entire world and it not be repetitive.
Yeah ecthelion and fingon were very special to me. I liked maedhros too but I just was very sad to see him take the path that he did.
And I'm always happy to give compliments where they are deserved.
