Description I was looking at the older stuff in my gallery one day and I viewed this little thing right here [link] , which I made for a (canceled) project called Chicrits. I may pick up that project again one day, it was fun to do.

Anywho, I loved that creature from the first time I drew it up until today but had kind of forgotten about it. But when I saw it again while digging for old stuff to throw out of my gallery, I just had to redraw it. I added a few things, but that's not the point. I hope you guys can still distinguish his ears from his horns and mane X)

Fun with pencill shading. yay. Big version under the download button, for all the tiny details and wallpaper-like quality.

ALSO, to the people I still owe trade-parts, I know I'm slacking and need to get on those trades. T-T I'm on it, I have not forgotten! Have faith!

And that's it for this one ^^ media used: Mechanical pencil.

Thank you! This is a rather old piece, but I still love the creature a lot. Perhaps I should redraw it some time.

How do you do that old parchment looking background, cuz it really does add so much more depth to your drawing without needing to add a background. Oh and I really like where your art is going, good work!

Mystalia In reply to Ardail [2011-10-01 08:29:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't know what program you're working on (I use GIMP), but it's really quite simple. You take a texture you like (you can search for any one you want on dA or google or whatever. BUT you have to look if people want to be credited for it when you use it. Keep in mind to do that in the artist comments, it would be disrespectful otherwise) and put it in a layer on top of your original drawing. Then copy the underlying sketch unto another new layer and put that on top of your texture. Then set that newest layer to the mode "multiply". Voila, you're done!

And thanks for the compliment ^^ I do think I can spot an upward curve of learning and improving in my drawings, that's good. It's also awesome that other people notice as well! Thank you so much, that means a lot.

No problem, I know what it's like working hard on your pictures and trying to improve while hoping to be noticed that you are improving. I was just wondering cuz I was considering to get Photoshop or something and try some work on the computer.

Yes, I know :/ The horns kind of drown in the manes. Oh well, i'll have to do better on that in the next picture. I'm just glad people seem to like it, regardless X).

Thank you for stopping by! ^^

It's really great! Do you draw this ith one pencil or with many like B, H and something like this? Ans what paper do you use? It looks very cool. Reminds me on a map for a buried treasure. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mystalia In reply to Caramelcrayon [2011-07-24 11:49:49 +0000 UTC]

For this I only used one pencil; a mechanical 0.7 tip HB pencil. It's pretty standard, you can buy one everywhere.

And the paper is standard white paper, but I put a digital texture on it so viewers won't be blinded by the white background on a screen. ^^ I do make old-looking paper from time to time, but I'm out of stock now, so I just draw on regular white paper.

Thank you ^^
I don't really have the time to give tips on every one of your deviations, but if you link me one or two, I'd be happy to give you some pointers on those

An overall (very appreciated) tip, though, would be to improve the quality of the pictures a bit by either scanning them or taking a photograph under the right light. It's a shame when a good drawing is photographed badly, because it will distract viewers from the drawing.

For a pencil to be used on something like this is really impressive..
I just love the background you threw into this!

Looks like something you would see in an art book full of designs and concept work for a film or a computer game!
Very interesting..!

Mystalia In reply to Zekkentak [2011-07-01 08:08:55 +0000 UTC]

I love working with just a pencil and nothing else ^^ it's simply what i'm best at. At least, I'd like to think so.

The background is a digital texture I put behind a lot of my drawings, because 1) I don't want to blind viewers with a white background on a screen and 2) it looks good behind sketches and pencil drawings ^^ I don't really remember where I got the texture though :/

And thank you so much ^^ It's so motivating to hear it looks like a game- or film concept. That's a really big compliment!

the horns other than the main one on his forehead are a bit hard to find but his ears seem well-defined and i love the picture as a whole

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mystalia In reply to lupe540 [2011-06-30 09:14:00 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know X) No matter how hard I tried, the horns would not look different from the hair to such an extent that they would be easy to spot. That bothers me, but all together I thought it looked pretty nice.

Thank you so much! ^^

Sort of a dragon mixed with a canine with a tiny bit of equine too. The top-down angle of view to the creature is very dynamic, and creates a little ambiguity as to the its demeanor and personality while making it look both dangerous and appealing at the same time. Also, the style kind of reminds me of some of Keiji Inafune's conceptual illustrations for the dragons in the Breath of Fire video game series.

All in all, awesome work. I'm glad your past work inspired you to make this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mystalia In reply to Hylanvahr [2011-06-29 22:20:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the original thought was to make a mix between a gryphon and a kirin, but that somehow led to the design of a whole new species. I still call it Kirion, though. It's catchy.

And thank you ^^ I did try to make it look intimidating by picturing it from an angle tilted downward. Though the intention was not so much "dangerous", I do like that it made you think that. A positive review is always good to hear.

Thanks so much for the feedback ^^ It's great to know that the regulars are still stopping by.
