How do you join the two sides? I've been looking at these all online for a while now and haven't figured that bit out

use clear thread, sorta like fishing line. Sew around the edges, almost like you're wrapping it around the edges. the tricky part is not cutting the 'fabric' too close to your work.

Cross stitching, you make little 'x's with thread.
