Description "The Coyote"

A coyote can be just as beautiful and majestic as any wolf.

Much like the wolf, the coyote gets alot of bad rep, especially in Ohio from what i can personally say i have experienced myself growing up.
You hear them at night in the countryside.
Yet my mom having grown up in the country there had only actually seen a live one ONCE, and i was lucky enough to have been with her to have seen it too. That was in 2008-2009 i think, oh yeah and shes in her 50's by the way, thats a long time to have lived in a place and not see an animal that is supposedly 'overpopulated'.

The only other coyote's we've seen are the maybe 2-3 a year in our area as roadkill.
I'll never forget the one we saw alive though, he was BIG we actually thought he was a deer at first, and then a dog, as we were driving up on him, because you never see coyotes.
I wont forget me and my mom saying in unison:
"Its a coyote!"

We were driving down a country backroad coming back from something as boring as a dentist appointment of all things at 12pm noon.
He was a tall lanky fellow, big ears, and such a beautiful face.
We were close enough to see his markings.

He was standing next to a ranch house and looked groggy as the early noon sun was hitting his face, like he had just woken up.

Across the road was a horse farm though, so hopefully he didnt cause any trouble. We turned around to see if we could watch him a bit longer as there was a car behind us so we couldnt stop, but once we got back there he was gone.
One of the most exilerating experiences of my life, that was the first time i ever saw a live wild canid IN THE WILD.

In Ohio, my home, we have killed off most of the predators, even some snakes there are endangered now, we are heavily overpopulated with deer, you can not visit Ohio's countryside in the morning or evening and not see any deer lets just put it that way.

Cougar's there have been extinct for years and only got technically classified as extinct just recently.
(not the best wildlife management in the world...)

No wolves whatsoever, they have been extinct since
around and possibly before the 1900's.

And a very sad dwindling black bear population
that no one cares about.

The coyotes are the only ones eating the deer besides us people,
and even then we are encroaching so much on the forests that we are having conflicts with them more often, which makes people assume that they are overpopulated.

A few years back in 2008 it was actually on the news that they were gathering hunters up to go shoot the "overpopulated coyote boom" even though i dont recall hearing anything about any attacks on people just small pets that belonged to careless owners who let them run free. (And it should be said that some of these were actually coydogs. aka coyote dog mixes.) They had only spotted the coyotes passing through peoples yards and parks in Indian Hill you can read about it in an article here: [link]
(Reminds me of the wolf hunts way back...)
Police and hunters killed fifteen coyotes that year, but does this mean that they are indeed overpopulated? No, mind you there has been ALOT of 'development' aka construction for duplexes and shopping stores in the past few years there, its more likely that we have forced them out of their habitat
because we forced our way in.

And at the time i remember the public was scared to let their kids play outside, my grandma warned me every time i took the dog out, everyone was cautious about getting into their cars at night. Everyone was talking about the coyotes.
Its good to be cautious and preventative, but to be downright scared?
You hear so much monster stories about them eating your cats and dogs and attacking your children yet most people who have lived there their entire lives into old age have never even seen one.

I actually asked a friend of the family through phone yesterday "How many times have you seen a coyote?"
this man is 59 years old, has been hunting since he was a boy, and hunts two times a week (sometimes three now that hes retired) during each squirrel season, rabbit season, and deer season. And he said in his entire life he has only seen a coyote 5 times.
Now, he grew up hunting in Kentucky, (which supposedly has MORE coyotes than Ohio) and he has now lived in Ohio for YEARS and hunts there. So having been out hunting in the forests of both Ohio AND Kentucky from a boy to the age of 59 he has only seen a coyote FIVE times.
Fishy eh?
Im aware that coyotes are mostly nocturnal
so i think coyote populations are 'healthy' in Ohio, as
they are the most adaptable wild canid can thrive and can go unseen living even in cities but i do not think they are 'overpopulated' in Ohio.
Mind you, there wouldnt even be any coyotes in the northeastern states had we not killed off the wolf in those parts.
Coyotes originally were found only in the western states, and when the wolves were wiped out the coyotes migrated outward through much of North America to fill in the niche the wolves left behind.
Because of this its is actually speculated that some of the Coyotes actually hybridized with the leftover wolves, so that explains why the eastern coyotes are sometimes referred to as "brush wolves" due to their large sizes and different skull shapes.

Best way to prevent an encounter is to please
NOT leave pet food outside, seal your trash cans,
keep your cats indoors, and keep your small pets
ALWAYS supervised when in the yard and ALWAYS
on a leash outside otherwise, btw the leash is totally in-effective if you let it go/drop it for whatever reason, like the
woman did in the article above.
And do not go to wooded area's by yourself.

Done in watercolor colored pencils.
This is as much to the likeness of the coyote i saw
that day as i can remember. He was just a bit
lighter in color than this.

I like coyotes in the city, because they eat free-roaming cats that can kill birds.

Yes, the cats get sick and spread disease among eachother, sometimes to wild cats like bobcat who are native species. :C

Beautiful drawing. I wish you luck with seeing more coyotes (:

Coyotes are my third favorite canidae after wolves and foxes. We have a big population were I am, but it's not so bad like in some areas. I've had a really close encounter with one last summer. My sister's dog spooked it out of the woods where my boyfriend and I were walking. It stood right in front of us and it looked so terrified. Luckily it got away. I've had some other encounters too.

Indeed. I read a good chunk of it though. XD

FFFFF I wish I had coyote where I live. X( All I ever see around my area are deer, a shet load of different birds, bear, fox, raccoon, possums, and VERY VERY VERY few wolves.

Well done! Your skills are getting better and better.
The Coyote looks very good and gorgeous, they are very interesting animals. It's great that you are working with water-soluble pencils, practice with them makes a great base for the wet media.
On the background - you can create better sense of depth by making the front trees even more dark and wide and the distant ones more blurry, thin and lighter than the front.
I really suggest you to try and use some wet media as watercolors or acrylics. At first it seems as hard as hell to work with liquids and brushes but you'll see that the liquid media will give you lots of freedom and almost no white space around - it's much easier to paint backgrounds with them than with pencils!
And you can always try pastels, the results are amazing, although they are not my favorite media but there are lots of amazing pastel artists here in DA!

Thanks so much for the critique!

I tried to create depth by doing that with the trees,
but it was difficult because i had to mix my
colors to get the brown that i wanted,
and the picture looked too light so i had to darken
alot of things and i got carried away. Haha.
oops.
I'll try to focus better on that next time.

I dont feel very comfortable with regular paints
yet, i know the pencil better, and we'll see if
the watercolor pencils will ease me into it.

Thanks so much again for commenting!
Your comments are always helpful and show
me what direction i should try to improve.
I really appreciate it!

Beautiful job! It's sad that people don't treat them with as much respect as they should. =/

Here where I live in California there are many coyotes on the outskirts of the city where I live. I've seen quite a few both alive, and unfortunately roadkill. The most amazing encounter I had was when I was in Death Valley, California about 4/5 hours away from where I live in Fresno. I was walking from the pool to the motel/cabin room at night. I looked up, and literally five feet in front of me a coyote went right across the path and looked up at me. He was beautiful!! Made my heart pound though because that's the closest I've ever been to a coyote!! He was a really good size too, and lanky. I just stopped right in my place as he trotted past me. Everything felt like it was in slow motion.

Thank you.

Oh wow! There's just something about wild animals that
can just enchant you. I think its partly cuz
they come from a completely different world than us.

While we are caught up in our human lives,
they are out there just trying to survive,
they have a different language, social structure,
thought process, etc.

So when we see one, it makes us live in the moment
which is why time seems to go in slow motion.

I always love all the info in your descriptions, no matter how long ... I always learn something!
coyotes have a bad rap here as well, most anyone you talk to will classify them as a scavenging pest :/
some of Devon's relatives actually have hound dogs just for taking out to chase done coyotes and destroy them because apparently they are eating the calves as they are being born :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mysteriouswhitewolf In reply to whitew3r3wolf [2012-04-13 20:18:00 +0000 UTC]

Coyotes are actually bad for eating newborn animals,
they have a special taste for em.
They are much easier for their light build to take down.
A coyote will smell when a calf/fawn is born from
very far away and travel good distances to get it.

That is partially why the pronghorn population whent down,
after the wolves left the coyotes went crazy on the antelope
calf's.

Im not sure how the populations are up there for coyotes,
but i know more personally about the ones in Ohio.

They are more brazin and onry than wolves lol.
Brave lil guys. But they are animals just acting
on instinct, not monsters that go looking
to gobble you up. I honestly wouldnt shoot
one unless it was actually going after me my animals
or a child. Certainly wouldnt go out looking to kill them.
Poor things.
They should be respected not hated.
:/ makes me sad to hear stuff like that.

they are pretty plentiful around here, and waltz right through town often, but are pretty good about staying out of sight. just lots of tracks everywhere
