Zuko had done the same thing, except he joined Avatar Aang and co. when he came to the Western Air Temple, albeit his offer was rejected because of the things he done in the past, such as chasing after him, burning down Kyoshi Island, used Katara's necklace for June the Bounter Hunter to track them down, sided with Azula when Ba Sing Se was taken over, and hired Combustion Man to assassinate the Avatar, but risked his life to stop him.
