Description (Or, y'know, don't because that would be horrifying O.o)

Since I've been in a bit of an artistic lull (too many ideas, not enough motivation to follow one through) I decided to do a little project I'd been sitting on for a little while. Another fan art of the Sandman from the 1991 short of the same name.

Here's the first one: fav.me/dcfqjr2

This was also a chance to play with some new supplies; I finally got a toned-gray sketchbook, and I did some further experimenting with the Pentel Sparkle Pop gel pens, though you can't really see it here in the scan and I couldn't seem to get a good picture. But in person when the light hits the drawing it really is a nice touch, I think.

I also played with not doing black lines and instead did the first pass with a Paper Mate clear point with blue lead, which worked fine until I started coloring. Since it is just pencil lead, it started to blend into the other colors I was using, literally and just in a color sense. So I ended up going back with some darker blue colored pencils and the aforementioned gel pens, which seemed to do the trick.

This was also interesting since I got to kind of experiment with shading backward. Since I went off of my original digital sketch, I did the main lines and preliminary shading first. Then I went in with the white pencil to hopefully nail down the moon imagery in Mr. Sandman's face, which I think sort of worked. Then it was on to building up and blending shadows and others shades of blue, and a hint of other colors that kinda got lost overall.

Once he was done, it was missing something. The only idea I really felt like giving a shot (things were going well and I didn't want to screw it up; the gel pens were hard enough to mentally convince myself of) was to take the three neon Prismacolors and just do a little grounding with color, as that would kind of echo what I'd done with the colors in the digital version, and some of the dramatic lighting in the short. It's flawed, but I don't hate it.

Then I signed it, and to my surprise that Sparkle Pop does actually look purple on the scan. The glitter in it makes it look more of a deep blue in-person.

Overall, I think I like the digital version better, but I think this one has it's merits and if nothing else it gave me a chance to try and practice other things and gave me something to focus on while I've been stressing over orientation tomorrow. (Because nobody can be bothered to throw up like two sentences on the college website of what's actually going to happen. For some reason. )

Not exactly sure what's next, nor if this is the last we'll see of ol' Sandy here. I'm leaning towards maybe something involving Tokidoki, but I'm not sure.

From the thumbnail I first thought it was a bird xD.

The shading looks nice and I like the eye a lot as well.
