Ah, this looks a bit more typical than some of the other stuff I've been posting this year, doesn't it?
Maybe not entirely since I don't usually draw things this angry looking, but still. And that was kind of the point, anyway!
You can watch the Time Lapse of this hissin' kitten being made here !
I started on this angry little kitty for "World Goth Day" on May 22nd, but some real-life shenanigans ended up eating the time I had intended to spend working on it, so I didn't finish it until into the wee hours of the 23rd.
I was unsure when the next best posting window for it would be other than maybe sometime in October for the spooky vibes. It felt like kind of a shame since this was my first time really experimenting with a cat expression other than "cute and content."
But wait—It's not October at the time of posting, is it? Nope! Your calendar is correct—It's August. But the Monthly Theme on the official Ko-fi Discord Sever for this month is "Animal Planet," and I don't currently have any other plans for animal-themed art in the immediate future, so this seems like as good of an opportunity as any. I'll have plenty of stuff to post come October ['tis the month of daily challenges, after all], so I'd rather squeeze in the extra upload now, I think. Although a full disclosure that I've got a couple of backlogged animal pieces I'm considering uploading closer to the end of the month that might wind up being my final submissions for the challenge—we've still got a couple of weeks, so I'm going to wait until a bit closer to the deadline to make sure I'm satisfied with my choice.
Although, I do have to wonder if it's maybe for the better that it didn't go up on Goth day in the end anyhow, if only because every time I look at it now all I can think of is the band KISS and I'm not sure if that would be acceptable to people that are way deeper into Goth culture than I.
For context, some research into Goth culture I did a while back [after an utterly unrelated conversation with a friend that is even further away from being Goth than I am] revealed that it's typically the music that makes a Goth, not the aesthetic. That is, unless you're talking about Gothic Literature which is, apparently, a whole separate category.
Thus, I'm unconvinced KISS is actually classified as "Goth" music. (And I did find at least one thread on r/Goth that uh, to put it delicately, had a few Goths that didn't sound too fond someone would even have to ask that question, so...)
Still, properly "Goth" or not, the art turned out pretty fun, didn't it? I'm pretty happy with it—Enough so that for once I don't have any changes I can name right off that might make it better. I'm sure there are plenty, but the point is this is one simpler project that fortunately stayed simple, and that's a rare occurrence for me.
For the record, there are two relatively small changes I ended up making before posting, though. Originally, I did make the eyes/eyebrows this slanted and angry, but as just lines it looked like I'd pushed it too far. So I switched gears and relaxed them a bit. With everything colored in though, the black of the fur and the thick eyeliner made the more relaxed angry slant harder to notice. Reverting back to the "too angry" slant was the natural choice.
The other thing is the claw marks in the background—I debated what color they should be more than once. Red was the first color I tried, but at that moment it seemed wrong. I had settled on purple for a while, but after some thought, I didn't care for how that was the only purple present. The eyes being the only green is a little different—it pulls your attention to the center, and I was able to add the yellow around the pupils so it would feel more purposeful.
My "compromise" was to try two shades of red instead of one. Both dark, but one darker still than the other. Both also taken from some of the mouth colors. It's almost ridiculous how such a small change to using the red made it work that much better. Plus I think since they are claw marks, them being red deepens the "violent" impression they give off by default. Makes them seem more like deep gashes.
It's sort of funny; Now that I look at it, this piece reminds me a lot of Intercatlactic Valentine . And they are similar—both black and white floating cat heads with themed backgrounds. It's just that theming is nearly opposite between them. Maybe the kitties are related?
Whatever the case, I think this was good for me both as practice with an expression I don't have much experience with and I think I can always use more simple projects to remind me...y'know, simple is an option. I'm very good at forgetting that.
Speaking of, I think that'll do it for today. I've got some other projects that are best not to be forgotten this month that I'd better get back to. See ya!
