Description The main piece of this necklace is a hand painted bronze fairy charm. Hanging from her wings is a keyhole, which is painted with the same bronze color and buffed for highlights. Hanging from the keyhole is a small key charm with decorative bronze chain. Adding a touch of color are two navy beads hanging from each bottom wing.

This was seriously fun to make.

No problem! Um... I'll just list what comes to mind. ^^
Where do you get components?
How do you form a design?
Any other advice?
Thanks!

Several different places : Ebay, Etsy, retail stores, flea markets, broken jewelry... If I'm looking for a specific piece, I'll look online for it, but sometimes I get pieces I've taken apart or are broken to use at random.

Designing comes to me in three forms. I'll think of an idea in my head and form it further around what components I can find - I take what I already own and form a design (leftover, broken, or pieces I don't use often that need to go) - I design as I am shopping for new items. Sometimes I sketch designs. I'll scale what I find online to see how it will look before I order the new parts. Then other times I just lay pieces out or put them together to see how they look. I did the very thing with this fairy necklace.

Those are pretty much my top advice points - spend time looking for components, spend time coming up with designs, and spend time experimenting when you have the items in hand.

Wow, thanks so much! This is really helpful. Thank you for sharing, a lot of jewelry makers are so secretive.

No problem.

I think the reasons some are secretive are 1) there isn't much of a secret and 2) it is a growing field and becoming increasingly competitive. Where to find components and tools is the main reason for withholding information, in my opinion. They're easier to find than a lot of people let on. I mean, I get some of mine at Walmart. Everyone knows Walmart.

Your creativity, ability to work with the materials (whether they be the normal jewelry making materials or others you bring into the mix), and networking are what get you places.

I agree. I hate that it's not as much of a community.
Thank you again for the advice!
