It seems to me that if a centaur was going to wear clothes at all, he'd want to put something on his lower body. With armour, that'd be even more important.

Yeah, I did think about that while working on it. ;w; There are two reasons why I didn't keep that part of the sketch:
1) It was bulky and impeding the design. (And I just gave up when I couldn't get it to look right without looking like it impeded his movement). I was a bit vain about the design of the horse section and didn't want to cover it.
2) I decided to base his 'uniform' style, at first, on Celtic styles, which involves fighting in the nude. Later, after sketching for a little while, derivation of Spartan soldier attire, which in most accounts that I heard only involved minimal coverage.
Since this challenge is one in which I focus mostly on the aesthetic and tone of the design more than the realism, I didn't stress as much as I usually would have on the viability of the armor.
Now, as for the stories in which I draw/write centaurs in warfare, I will spend much longer designing the armor and studying how different kinds of armor are good in areas/bad in areas.
