Roman Praetorian Guard...or at least that's where I started from
I don't really know if he can be classified anymore and I didn't want to keep him very close to the original either. What I had in mind was a roman warrior, a Praetorian in my case, able to show both elegance and agility without sacrificing any of the aspects of a fearsome warrior.

It's a nice painting but only the helmet looks praetorian. The other items look like a greek hoplite, but you already stated yourself that it was just a starting point
Anyways, still a nice piece of work.
If you are looking for good references, check out the re-enactment groups, lots of nice pictures to be found there.
