Description Speedpainting of a random environmental concept.

Grayscale took 2 hours. Colorizing...well, that took a while

This is my first environment painting and also the first time I paint in grayscale before color, so colorizing took me a while to figure it out.

it may sound simple, but it isn't the short answer would be: lots and lots of layers
and to be more precise, I worked with soft light, overlay, color, multiply and normal (this one set to 30% opacity) blending modes and constantly merging them.
I can't say for sure this is the way to do it. You certainly don't have the same control over colors as when painting directly with colors. Many people use just a few layers: a soft light one, a multiply one and a color one. I couldn't get the grip over the colorizing thing so I just used more. My advice is pretty...stupid, but you should play around with a lot of layers and blending modes before coming to an end. Don't be afraid to work with 20 layers, even if things do mess up

and thank you

Such a lovely piece! The colours you've applied all work harmoniously together. I really like how you've applied the reflection from the sunset on the surrounding rocks in the piece. Just wondering though, why did you colour in greyscale to begin with?

Thank you so much I've been wondering about the grayscale technique for some time, so I thought I'd give it a try, especially when painting environments. Sometimes it's hard figuring out what colors and values to use when you have to create a pretty detailed landscape for example. Grayscale makes it easier by having to worry only about shape and lighting, rather than choosing the correct colors, hue, saturation AND building up the shapes and lighting in the same time. Think of it as drawing in crayon
