Well, eye always seeks for contrast, his white area should be very attractive in first place by design.
Empty background wouldn't attract it much anyway. Still interesting concept, thx for tip.

It's actually copper but it's not easy to distinguish them sometimes. Gold is actually sometimes mixed whit copper to give it reddish tint, it's called red gold I think. Maybe he has some gold mixed into alloy that he uses for those plates, for some reasons. Who knows
