I know what you mean. I've found that when I've tried, I wasn't sure whether they actually would be recognizable if not done in the fully manga style. I'm still experimenting though.

I find you can generally get a away with a lot of artistic license on characters and they are still recognisable. Some of the best fanart puts its own unique spin on characters

that is quite a nice flora piece. my only issue is her arms look a little thin and her hands a little small but beyond that it looks really nice. I especially like how you did the eyes and hair.
