Yeah it's easy to end up distorting proportions on scratchboard. I have a little trick I do sometimes.. I print out the image on paper and lay it on top, then use the knife to poke guide holes through the paper and end up with little tiny white guide dots on the board. It helps keep me on track on a face or scene.  Since there are NO DO-OVERS on a scratchboard, it's a handy technique!

Omg, that's an epic idea!! I'll definitely do that next time! I'll only use this technique a few times tho, still training my self to eye proportion rather than tracing in anyway, but this will definitely help me get past my current displeasure with this damn scratchboard stuff!! Thank you very much for the tip!

I used to be really hard on myself about getting proportions right by eyeballing, but I've loosened up over the years and use whatever tool and trick i can think of to get it right.  In the end nobody is going to accuse of you of "cheating" just because you didn't eyeball everything and get it perfectly right.  Use any tools available.  The end product is what counts.
