Description So, the website isn't quite ready yet (Btw, websites actually take A LOT of work! Who knew??). So I figured I'd post page one here.

Obviously this page's purpose is setting the scene and will be work a lot better when read through the archives. But by posting it here you all can appreciate all the details instead of glossing over it on your way to the characters.

Silver lining, I suppose.

As far as the website goes, there are a few of the extras pages that need to be finished and some kinks to be worked out. Archmage (my webmaster) predicts that it'll probably be ready for launch about 2 weeks from today. Which would make it the 4th of July.

Webcomic officially launching Independence Day, PEOPLE!!!

So I'll probably be posting a couple of the pages here until then. That way I can build up a bit of the archive now so there's something to crawl through on launch day.

Thanks for all the support and interest! We'll get the hang of this one way or another!! XD

EDIT:
The webcomic can now be found here:

You can draw trees, I am so envious right now. I can't do that at all.

Heh, thanks. I do enjoy drawing trees but sometimes I get a little too wrapped up in it and my backgrounds take longer than everything else on my page to do...

It's a blessing and a curse.

Landscapes are pretty easy for me (at least with a pen and/or pencil) but I can't seem to master it on a computer, especially with Photoshop. And tree closeups break me, especially deciduous trees.
I have found awesome ways to make planets, though! Gaussian blur is my friend for just about everything, from lineart to glow effects.

Now its my turn to envy you. I just can't seem to get the hang of Photoshop... I'm a traditional artist at heart and PS is just so complicated I can't wrap my head around it.

I actually use Manga Studio 4, it's all about comics and a lot more intuitive (for me at least ).

Does MS4 have a trial? If it's good for comics, I'd really like to try it out. I'm trying to experiment with layout and borders without letting line tools do it for me. I use SAI for lineart, mostly because it recognizes tablet pen pressure so well, but I'm liking PS for coloring and filters more. I get to cheat with filters, if I don't like how something is turning out, I can run it through a filter and give it an artsy twist. Haha

I do everything for my comic with MS4 except for lettering but that's only because I downloaded a special font that's not compatible with it. It's perfect for comic making. It has all sorts of panel tools, tones, word bubbles, brushes, pens, etc etc. And I find it a lot easier to use than any other program I've tried. XP

You are the coolest person on the face of the Earth, thank you!
I will try that out tonight with my new panel, or at least the last panel. I think I know exactly what to do with photoshop preceding the last panel.
I'm going for a cool schematic/blueprint layout! It should be spiffy.

Heh, n/p.

Let me know how it goes. And feel free to ask any questions if you get stuck. It's pretty intuitive overall but it does have a couple weird little things about it that can make it a little tricky.

Hi there!
I hate that I had to wait for so long to comment, but I was really busy...
Anyway, I'm here now

I gotta say, I really like this.
This page is pretty much the perfect tease. I love the dynamic and build-up. My only criticism would be the sound effects (I don't think they fit their surroundings, with the fonts and outlines and all), but other that that, brilliant page.
The pacing is just right. The birds, and then the raccoon looking up followed by the smaller animals that react to the sounds, well, that's just great. Couldn't be done any better, in fact.

Thanks for the feedback!

Ah, you noticed the sound effects? That's something I've been struggling with. With a page this highly toned I had a hard time finding a way to do effects that you can actually read over the pictures. Not completely satisfied but at least they're mostly legible!

It's a learning process. I'm hoping I'll look back at these first few pages several years down the line and laugh at how novice they look cuz I'll be such a pro by then... Or something. XD

The pacing is something I really worked at. I played around with the panels a lot just to get the right feel. I'm so glad it worked out!

Not all of my pages are going to be as highly toned as this (if I were to attempt that I'd never get done!) so I hope people wont be too disappointed. I do enjoy the tone work so I am going to try to do a page at this level at the start of every chapter. That way I can indulge myself without going overboard!

Yeah, you can really tell that you put a lot of effort in the pacing.

As for the sound effects, I think that using a font like BadaBoom BB would be a change for the better. Sticking to just one effect per sound effect would also be a good thing. What I mean with that is that you can curve your tekst, or put it in perspective, but both is going to be overkill pretty easely. It also serves to use no more then two fonts per page. This is all just my humble opinion of course, and it always depents on the context of the page.

But anyway, I'm looking forward to the rest!

NaarieKermie In reply to CyranoInk [2011-07-05 17:00:09 +0000 UTC]

I'll have to check that out, thanks! Having all the sound effects in the same font is a good idea. Don't want to distract from the page and make it look too busy.

It seems like most comic artists draw (or write) their own sound effects, which is probably why they flow so well. That isn't an option for me because my handwriting is AWFUL! XD So, I gotta find a working alternative. XP
