Wow, fascinating. There's nothing quite like the slightly depressing, sad feeling of an empty classroom.

This photo gives really well the sensation of happiness of the end of school and the beginning of summer. The simple kind of lettering add something of the easiness of childhood, when summer seemed to have no end. That writing is not made to last, just as summer vacation.

Everyone of us felt that emotion.

Thanks for the sweet remembering.

its a great photo, but does not deserve a DD.

Gonzale In reply to SilverButton [2009-07-04 22:56:33 +0000 UTC]

hello. it's not you to say if something "deserves" anything.
Say you don't like it, fine, but don't talk about "deserving" please.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverButton In reply to Gonzale [2009-07-04 23:07:04 +0000 UTC]

everyones free to talk about their opinion, its not for you to say if someone shouldnt give out their opinion, specially when this website is running on the members opinions and comments.

I personally think there are tons other stuff on this website that deserve more than this piece, its nothing nasty.. its just my opinion and i feel like sharing it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gonzale In reply to SilverButton [2009-07-04 23:18:57 +0000 UTC]

i never said you weren't free to speak out your opinion, i said you could say you didn't like this photo.

the word "deserve" is something different, and in my opinion it is not a word to use here.
when you say "this doesnt deserve a DD", you realise you sound superior, right ? you give yourself the ability to judge if a photo "deserves" a feature...

it's not the same thing as saying you don't like something.
When i feature a photograph, i'm saying that i love a photograph and that i feel it should be seen and appreciated by others. People on this site have to understand it's a very subjective action, and that we as gallery moderators aren't trying to convince anyone, and we're not on this mission to show people what they should like. You can say you don't like, if you don't mind people to comment on your photos saying they don't like them.
I have yet to understand why DDs make so many people angry... Just accept that people have different tastes, that we are people just like you and that what you say "deserves more on this site" might not "deserve" it in my eyes.

that said, goodnight !

I think it's interesting that you of all people talk about superiority when I have seen you on multiple of your featured plain-jane DD's defending your decision by flinging around your credentials. "Having studied photography for 'X' years, I don't need to be told..." as I read on the wildly-debated "curlers" photo. If you don't realize how completely and utterly elitist you seem when you say things like that, here's your call.

As far as what SilverButton said, he/she is correct... this site runs on the opinions of one another. The premise of this whole entire community is that everyone is free to be an artist in their own right.

And that being said, I like this photo plain and simple. Kudos to the artist for taking something simple and otherwise lackluster and making it interesting, even if all it takes is a little rotation and capture of minute details.

Gonzale In reply to marcie4real [2009-07-05 10:20:45 +0000 UTC]

you obviously haven't read me well, i've never positionned myself as superior.

is saying that someone can't teach me something about photography (having had a lot of teachers for that) a message of superiority ? i don't think so. the person presented himself as superior to me, and i just balanced the thing.

all i'm saying everywhere i reply, is that we're entitled to our opinions.
and basically to give a little thought before flaming somene's photograph. most of the criticism that was expressed was unfounded (saying it's a cellphone shot when it was taken with a medium format film camera... and so on)

anyway.

SilverButton In reply to Gonzale [2009-07-05 01:22:24 +0000 UTC]

i appreciate your time in writing but what you should undertstand is that i have freedom when i sign up here, and thats to say anything i think that would be appropritate, in this case i genuinely wanted you to know this piece does not deserve to be a DD, maybe you should be greatful that it is?

in my view, DD's are all about professionalism and this piece doesnt have it all, its just like a mobile phone snap. people like me get angry over DD"s because they contribute towards this site quiet alot and moderators just accept any DD that fits their taste..

If you want to have your say (reply) and i will read it but to me this is end of our little discussion, your just on the same level as me on this website and your just not in the possition to try and educate on what i can or cant do in this website in anyway, maybe if an admin says hey dont say it.. i would say alright sure, you rule power here..

but to listen to you talking all that nonsense, i would have to be a fool

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Gonzale In reply to SilverButton [2009-07-05 10:15:45 +0000 UTC]

the notion of "professionalism" is something very vague...
a "professionnal" artist can take cellphone photos and exhibit them and sell them, for instance
in addition, the photographer here probably took this shot with an analog camera so that's besides the point.

every notion that will make you say that something deserves something will be in the end a very subjective judgement of yours, as much as this being a DD is a very personnal decision.
that's all i'm saying. i'm not trying to teach you things, i'm not saying i'm better/higher/smarter than you, i'm just trying to make the comments on this photo to be the most moderate and/or thoughtful.

And fyi, she is a gallery mod, someone with a little bit of power here.

Either I'm stupid or blind but I don't see it. I mean, of course I see the writing "Swimming" and I see all the chairs but that's it. I wonder why did you take the shot and I'm really puzzled why do so many people like it (assuming they don't fave it and write all the praise just because it's featured and others say it's a good photo)... I do like seeking beautiful and interesting things in an ordinary but - sorry to say it - this is not the case to me...

Vaxl In reply to StrixCZ [2009-07-05 00:36:52 +0000 UTC]

I think it's fun to see how the class, even the teacher, would like a break from school, or a taste of summer, in the fall. (Look out the window.) It's kinda cute. <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StrixCZ In reply to Vaxl [2009-07-05 01:05:06 +0000 UTC]

Well, I tried to think about it that way but the photo's just not appealing to me. I feel disturbed by it's rotation, it's composition seems shattered (no main subject, too many things to look at) and the greenish light makes the atmosphere kinda hospital like (=uneasy) to me. Looks much more like a not so good snapshot than a photo with an artistic approach... I hope nobody would take that personal, just thinking out loud... (I'm often surprised how many deviants consider any critique rude.)

Ah. Heh, I try to feel the same way about books... Namely Twilight. My not-so-internal inner critique makes me gag at it, and how it gets progressively worse as it goes on, in my humble opinion.

I think this photo is an act of irony because it's very probable that it's winter, and yet the board says, 'swimming'.
