Description This is an illustration for my professor's article about the Eskimo Curlew (Numenius borealis), a beautiful wader similar to Whimbrel. It used to form huge flocks, but nowadays, you won't see them anymore. In fact, you won't see even a single bird. It was hunted down and the curlew was last seen several decades ago (There's even a movie about this species! It's called The Last of the Curlews). That's why no decent photos with many details exist, mostly just photos of taxidermied individuals. Due to that I had some trouble finding all the characteristics I needed, so I spent several hours just searching for photos, pictures and descriptions. This picture is as accurate as I could make it. Hope you'll like it

This time I was saving the picture in the process, so if you're interested, you can watch the animation here: :thumb353893305:

Thank you for reminding people that we have a responsibility, as stewards of the earth, to stop this from happening to other species.

K tomuhle obrázku se často vracím. Běžně jen na pokochání, dneska na dumání, jak sakra namalovat peří (a jak tak na to koukám, budu u něj meditovat i při malování trávy). ^^
Zanechal ve mě hluboký dojem. Je opravdu nádherný. Buď na sebe hrdá!

Ahhh, this is one of those paintings that has been sitting in my inbox for ages without a comment because I just couldn't figure out exactly what to write and how to write it. I still don't, so bear with me trying to say something sensible anyway d: Besides being brilliantly executed, this piece is also really special in itself because it does something we (probably) can't do in real life: bring back an extinct species and see it the way it used to be. Extinction is so sad, especially when in recent years, due to human activities. I watched that movie about the Last Eskimo curlew; very very sad indeed. Reminds me of the Passenger pigeon's fate. So, awesome that you brought this lost species back to life, at least here in this painting. Then to move onto the painting itself: the details and realism of it is astounding once again. Especially watching the 'step-by-step' animation it's fantastic to see how you went through painting all of those intricately marked feathers, and your work most definitely paid off! Great job in recreating the backlight coming through the wings and especially tail as well. An absolutely fantastic piece to me, one you should be very proud of indeed!

Oh, I'm sorry for such a late reply. I especially appologise, because your kind comment made me really happy, that, in fact, I didn't know what to reply and left it in my inbox to collect dust. And I feel terrible for not responding for so long even though you took your time to write your thoughts.
The extinction is extremely sad, indeed. But what's probably even more scary is that tons of species die out each year, some of which we haven't even gotten to know yet and are completely ignorant about, only noticing the extintion of the conspicuous species like this Eskimo Curlew, for example. I would love so much to see the huge flocks migrating each year thousands of kilometers to the south and back. It's just too terrible to learn how greedy people can be and how heartless to just shoot them all down eventually.
I hope I did this wonderful bird justice, even if only a bit.

There's absolutely no need to apologise; the exact same thing happens to me. The most amazing deviations in my inbox or the best comments I get usually sit around uncommented on/unreplied to longest of all. I totally know how you feel; you just don't know what to write (back) and instead just leave it be. So no need at all to feel terrible
Totally true; all the unsung extinct animals are so numerous yet so unknown. Some species go extinct before we've even discovered, others go extinct mere years after we discovered them. Some Hawaiian honeycreepers went extinct without anyone having taken any photo of them - the only way we know now what they looked like is due to artists who went to the rainforests to see and paint them before they disappeared. I'm with you, I'd love to see those huge flocks again, as well as the enormous flocks of Passenger pigeons that have since left the world. It's hideous to think how some people with guns can decimate some of the most numerous animal species in the world in a very short period of time, with very little effort. Human greed is enormous, and horrible. If you ask me, there's just too many people on the planet. We're pushing other species off the brink because we're using up the space and resources they actually needed.
I certainly think you did it justice, very much so

That is an amazing piece.  Like others I thought it was a photograph.  I even had to watch the animation to believe that it was not a photograph.

We get a variety of Curlew here in Cairns, Australia.  They come out at night and walk down our street making lots of noise.  We are near some creeks and trees so I guess that's where they go during the daytime.

Thank you very much for your nice comment and the story I loved their noises when we were staying nere the Eurasian Curlew's nest site at Baikal Lake. Their calls made a great atmosphere
You're lucky to live near these awsome creatures. At my home country, the curlews are a rare sight. Although We see them every year during migration

Bush-Stone Curlews are the name of our Curlews. One night there were at least five Curlews outside our house and casually walking down the street after midnight. It is amusing for my cat who sits each night looking through the bedroom window.

Haha, yeah, I believe a cat would be interested in that
