Oh wow! Awesome! Yes! I always started with the characters first too, but no. You need to start with the background colors and the others you take from that. Also another thing that completely blew my mind! if that drawing of the girl's at the sunset, all of the colors used are shades of yellow and orange. I did not use green! I used yellow! But against the oranges and other yellows, it looks green. The color on it's own is still just a shade of yellow. You can do that with almost anything. The drawing a posted right before that? The night scene? The only colors used were shades of blue ranging from purple to cyan. No green or brown in the whole thing. My mind was completely blown and now the possibilities for me are endless!
I was told to start with the main background color and then on the color wheel, you can move towards the color you want but never go completely to it. so if your starting color is orange and you want green, you stop at yellow. Or if your starting color is blue and you want brown, you stop in purple! It's amazing the effects. @.@ I still haven't figured out day scenes but night and sunset is amazing!

Good luck! Once you start experimenting, it just opens your eyes to all the possibilities and it's insane! Have fun.
