Description "Once at the mouth she was careful to silhouette herself as plainly as possible. It was never good to inadvertently sneak up on a dragon." ~ The Price For Luna by PoweredByTea

I've been meaning to do this for a long time. The first sketch for this piece was uploaded to my sta.sh on November 8th, 2015. It's been almost a year. At the end of last year I was feeling very burnt out, and this was one of the few things that I was really inspired to do. If you're at all interested in atmospheric, contemplative stories, steeped in the fantasy setting that drew so many people to FiM fanfiction in the first place, this story is worth a look. It's nominally incomplete, but the thrust of the story has been made, I think.

Edit: The the link above is dead due to some fimfiction BS, but Tea has finally properly released the story. It's now available here: www.fimfiction.net/story/39793…

Oh wow. Oh wow. I am speachless. That is pretty much absolutely perfect. It's just how I imagnined that scene. I think its the lighting, the glare of the midsummer sun and the gloom of the cave.

I need to sort out posting the rest. 2016, especially the second half, hasn't been a good year for me, but things have been looking up lately.

Oh wow. I was starting to figure you were gone for good, after you stopped logging in altogether for ... over four months now. I'm incredibly glad to see you're still around, and also that you approve of my interpretation of this scene!

Here's to a better 2017 for you!

Nice gold pile you got here.

It'll be a shame if some sneaky pants Princess steals it.

('the' should actually not be in the title. It's an easy mistake to make for non-native speakers.)

I'm not sure what mistake you think I'm making, but the title is a direct quote from the story, albeit capitalized for use as a title. Inanna uses "the" in this phrase so I did as well.

Just checked the story and it seems the writer did indeed make that mistake.

When talking about time as a concept, no 'the' is used. Similarly when we talk about Mankind we say 'Man' and not 'the Man'.

While "how the time flies" may or may not be idomatic, the extra "the" fits Inanna's speach patterns. She is very, very old and very, very tired. Her speach is slow, plodding, and devoid of overt emotion and adding extra words that aren't strictly needed is something she would do.

Some people do talk about The Man. Such as those who want to stick it to The Man. You're being The Man here, so I'm going to stick it to you.

Honestly, there's nothing grammatically incorrect in talking about the time. Yes, when used in a sentence like that one, "the time" usually refers to the current time, but there's no reason it couldn't refer to all the time that has passed since we last talked about the time.

It's not even the only time that "How the Time Flies" has been used as a title. It's only wrong if you're trying to quote that particular idiom.

I don't know why I'm bothering to argue this, but I am a native speaker, and I know that the time that has flown by can refer to a specific quantity of time, which is just as correct as the concept of time in general in this context, if somewhat less commonly used.

Hmm. Do you think it's a shrinking enthusiasm in pony, or more a burnt out feeling with art in general? I've seen many people no longer feel as inspired by pony as they used to.

NadnerbD In reply to Axis-of-Rotation [2016-10-19 02:10:32 +0000 UTC]

Well at the time it was because it felt hopelessly impossible trying to keep up with making art when my time was consumed by work. My time is still consumed by work, but I've come around to the idea that it's silly to give up entirely. Not that I ever really intended to, but it felt pretty pointless making art if I couldn't devote enough time to it to measurably improve. In short, it was with art in general and not pony in particular.

Axis-of-Rotation In reply to NadnerbD [2016-10-19 07:09:04 +0000 UTC]

Good, I don't think you should give up either. Though I seriously empathize with you on having little time to spare. I've always got something to do it seems, either related to work or family. Not to mention your art style seems it takes A LOT of time to accomplish. That's not easy. And if you're like me, it takes some time to really get into a good working groove. I can't just hop in dry and get a lot of work done--I have to build up momentum.

I don't know why, but I always thought your work involved art--I guess it doesn't? I know mine certainly doesn't involve writing. I work at a shoe store in a mall right now.

NadnerbD In reply to Axis-of-Rotation [2016-10-19 15:18:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it doesn't involve art. I write accounting software. For very a very loose definition of "write".

I totally do have to get into the zone, so to speak, in order to get anything done, and I get interrupted so much in the evening that I've become averse to even trying to art during most of the time when I technically can. Which basically leaves the wee hours of the morning, where I can get lots done, but at the cost of being a rage zombie in the morning. A true Faustian bargain.

It feels like a really common thing to see artists posting above pro-level work on dA but being pushed into non-art related jobs. I mean, if this guy can be stuck doing CS then I guess no one is good enough.

Yeah, life often seems to about doing what you don't want to do and not doing what you do want to. Not that you don't want to program, but you get my drift. It sucks. But it helps to know you're not alone, at least.

Interruption is often the devil of my life too. I've never even attempted early morning because I know there would just be no hope haha. All the willpower in the world the night before cannot override my desire to stay asleep come morning.

This is probably a dumb question, but have you tried very much to get a job related to art? I imagine it ain't easy. Of course that's assuming art is something you'd ever want to take beyond hobby/passion. Not everyone wants to, I don't think.

NadnerbD In reply to Axis-of-Rotation [2016-10-22 15:40:08 +0000 UTC]

Are you me? I absolutely will not get up in the morning, no matter how much I wanted to before I went to sleep. It's a miracle I can even go to work.

In answer to your question, no. I'm not the type that would get an "industry" job, I've never been formally trained and my skills are sort of lopsided. I've also determined that I wouldn't really want to do art work that I couldn't pick and choose what I wanted to do. That basically leaves freelancing or trying to create my own something, both of which have a lot of overhead that I don't have the patience for at the moment. Maybe someday.

Axis-of-Rotation In reply to NadnerbD [2016-10-23 18:35:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah and even after I do get up, I'm not very energetic until later in the day. This is especially so if I have to get up early. Bluh.

Sometimes I think "it would be fun to be an animator," or a comic book artist or do story boards...and then I realize I'm imagining I'm doing that for pony, or some other property I enjoy. Would I enjoy any of those jobs while working on some crap show I couldn't care less about, and that wasn't popular? Would my passion for art alone be able to sustain me? Probably not.
