2 questions if I may ask:
- do you use default photoshop brushes or do you have some special, custom ones?
- how do you change colours of lineart? It's completely black in the first stage, but you didn't comment how you adjust it, for example making lines greenish on trees, brown on bear etc. It may sound dumb, but that's the thing I alwayds wondered about.
Nonetheless it's interesting and well explained tutorial, thanks for sharing!

I'm not sure how this artist did it, but I know you can just semi lock the layer (first tool on the left in photoshop, if you hover your mouse over it, it says "lock transparent pixels" at least it does for CS5) then use a brush with a different colour and go over it. This tool locks the transparent pixels so that you can't colour them.

Awsome pictures, I'm a bit confused on how you got the colors to look so smooth and how you got your lines so straight. whenever I try they come out wobbly and sketchy. Next time go into more detail on what exactly you do and maybe show it in photoshop fram or whatever. Love your art

Thank you! My lines are wobbly too unless I draw them really fast
I will definitely do better next time I do a tutorial thing, thank you for the suggestion!

I have three questions. First, what do you use to get that specific line quality you have in step one? Do you have a special brush in photoshop you use? Illustrator?

Second, how do you go about adjusting the color of your lines in step six. I know there's a way to do this I've used myself, but I've never successfully been able to select a specific line or an area I wanted colored.

Finally, how do you that transparency in your colors? Notably the mist behind the bear and the ghost fox.

Thank you.

I use the standard brushes that come with photoshop. Sometimes I use the round brush and sometimes I experiment with others. All the lines are on one layer, and on that layer I click 'lock transparent pixels' that way I can paint all over that layer but it will only show up on my lines.

I love this tutorial. I really adore your style (found you through tumblr) I had a question though; I'm a bit lost between step four and five. How do you edit the gradients? Do you take, for instance, the darkest part of the gradient and create shadowing with it? Thanks a ton for responding!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nafah In reply to 4cquiesce [2012-01-28 09:11:39 +0000 UTC]

Hi, thank you! What I usually do to create shadows like that is I have a regular gradient on Layer 1 and on top of that I have a Layer 2 that I paint my shadow shape on, then I set that layer to Multiply, and then lower the opacity on layer 2 to about 20% or whatever looks good. I hope that helps! Or maybe I misunderstood the question..hmmm

Curious, do you draw your lines with the pen tool (PS) or its equivalent or do you draw them by hand? Because I can NEVER make lineart tidy enough to try something in this style. I always slap color on color and fix the mistakes as I paint. Sketches are virtually non-existent.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nafah In reply to Rabinna [2012-01-19 03:37:50 +0000 UTC]

I draw with the brush tool, but I actually use lots of layers when I draw. I will draw the head on a separate layer than other parts of the body. Sometimes I'll have two or three different layers with just the eyes and compare them to choose which eyes I like better. I can be pretty bad about it sometimes though, sometimes just the sketch gets up to like 20 layers. When I'm ready to paint I'll flatten the sketch layers and paint on top of them. Anywho! I'm rambling now, but i hope that helped!

MagneticOrange In reply to Nafah [2012-01-26 14:02:44 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty interesting to hear about all your layers. I work the same way, keeping everything separate and having a few options to choose from. I have an animation background so when I'm drawing on a light table it's very easy to throw down another piece of paper and foll with correction/options. And those same sensibilities carry over into the computer. Often times I've felt it's a weakness of mine in that I can't visualize what I want easily - that I'm indecisive and weighing too many options. But over time I've come to accept that art is more about process than anything. I enjoy the process and this is just how I happen to work. It would be nice to be faster, or cleaner, or more efficient, but I dunno - if it ain't broke... etc.

Anyway, thanks for sharing - it's always nice to make those process comparisons with other artists!

Rabinna In reply to Nafah [2012-01-19 17:22:09 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thank you for the reply. I've found that I'm personally much more efficient when I paint just in one layer or two. I still have this problem where I'll just stare at it as if I'm playing chess for a couple of hours, switching between snapshots (mainly why I never finish anything that's actually starting to look good). I think tons of layers would kill my productiveness (even more).

I have never done digital work like this, but I would like you to elaborate more about gradation and how you pick your light sources for the shadows and highlights. also, can you tell us if there are different coloring/shading methods you use based on different textures?

the rest seems pretty simple to follow, although I am not tech savvy at all and would take years to master it. :/
