Kolams are a South Indian art form. They are usually made on a dot grid, but not always, with rice flour. Sometimes the rice flour is dyed with colours. You might know them as rangolis
I've added my mom's kolam to the collab club. The design was by me, so the collab

excellent! that sounds really interesting...how did the art form come about? it seems like a really unusual idea. do they have any common themes, meanings, that sort of thing? are your parents from india originally? were you born in the states? is your mom an artist, too? i'm really interested in traditions and such!

I'm not really sure how it came about... I ll have to find out about that
Its very common in India, its done almost everyday by women and girls mostly. And its temporary, they have to wash it off before they start with the next one. They do have themes sometimes and are very significant during festivals. My parents are Indians and so am I I was born there, I ve been in the states for about 2 and a half years now My husband works here...
Traditions are interesting and nice, but I dont know much about them But I can find out if you would like to know more My mom is a kolam artist and so is my grandmom... My grandma comes up with designs and my mom makes them on the floor Its a nice collab setup for them

that's a really cool art for art's sake idea! and how cool for all the women to work together!

i had no idea you came here so recently. do you like it? what does your husband do? mine is a software engineer. i'm from st. louis, at least i was until i was 18 and moved out here for university.

are you and your family going to stay permanently or are you going back at eventually? it must have been hard to leave all your friends and home and the rest of your family. i lived in england for awhile when i was much younger and it was a wonderful experience to live in another country. my dad lives there half the time now, i actually wouldn't mind living there most/all of the time. but peter's work keeps us here in silicon valley.

i would be interested in learning the traditions, but you certainly don't have to go out of your way to find out unless you feel like it!

Oh yes I do like it here. But we would eventually get back to India My husband is a software engineer too, and so was I. We are in LA right now... It is a little hard without family, specially because I was never away from them. But its been quite easy to get used to things here, thanks to todays technology, I get to talk to them everyday We haven't had a vacation to India since I got here, so I should be going for sometime soon Probably in a couple of months. I would love to see England London and Liverpool mostly
I wouldn't call myself a traditional person, but somethings stick with us for good.. he hee n I really don't mind finding out

wow, two engineers! what particular field do you two work in? peter designs software for a chip testers. his company is called LTX-Creedence. it's kind of a tiny field. he went to carnagie mellon and got degrees in computer science and also in electrical engineering. he's a pretty brilliant kinda guy. are you working here?

wow, that's a long time not to go home. i bet you're really looking forward to it. i thought your mendhi style was extremely skilled. so i guess the cultural traditions are with you a good bit! the indian art i'm familiar with is really appealing to me. ohhhh and indian food!!! i love northern and southern styles. a large portion of the people who live in my part of the bay area are from india. i live in a townhouse complex and there are fantastic smells around dinner time all over. i always want to follow the smell and knock on someone's door and ask to come over for dinner! i'd love to see what homemade indian food is like. my stepmother (english) is good at cooking indian food. peter goes all out once in awhile and toasts spices and all and makes curry of one sort or another.

england rocks! i have a degree in british history. isn't it great how you can use google phone for incredibly cheap international calls? i'm guessing that's how you can afford to talk to your family there everyday! i use it to talk to my dad when he's in england. they live in brighton when there and st. louis when here.

Wow two degrees thats very nice British history sounds really interesting, I'm very much interested in their history and culture too Are you originally from England? I've always wanted to go to England
I don't work now, I wanted to move out of the field, and this was a perfect opportunity for me
Oh yes, bay area is full of Indians... I've been there once Home cooked food is very different from what we get here in most restaurants... You should try some if you get a chance
Is it the Brighton that Jane Austen mentions in Pride and Prejudice?
We mostly use Skype for video chats, so that we get to see everyone everyday
