this is SUPER late, but I like tot hink the wolf saw the orphaned sheep and wanted to care for it, but the lamb was scared, so he found sheepskin to wear so they could raise the little lamb as best as a sheep could <3 crIES

I like to imagine that the wolf isn't really evil, she just looks it. It really is just trying to make a lamb comfortable so she can take care of her. She found the carcass one day and, though it was gruesome, well, a wolf can only think a certain way, as a wolf. It wasn't quite so gruesome to her.
But at heart, she's gentle and kind.

Oh I like that interpretation! Perhaps she ate the sheep, then realized it was a mother, and felt heartbreaking guilt for the lamb. There's actually accounts of this happening in the wild; a predator finds the baby of the prey it killed, and tries its best to raise it as its own ʕ-ᴥ-ʔ
