Description Last summer, I was commissioned by SEALIFE dolphin watching  to create some illustrations for their new educational building. They opted for full realism, which made me very happy since it’s been a while since I could go all out on the nitty gritty details of pretty cetaceans. Over the next few days I’ll upload them all so you can finally see these beautiful boys and girls too.

★ Short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis)
A pretty boy to represent the species. You can tell gender often by markings - males are more boldly adorned - but in this case the post-anal hump is more conclusive: females have a slender tail without the bump. Common dolphins are incredibly varied in appearance around the world, but this is about as average as they get in the Atlantic. It makes them none the less beautiful though.

HAVE TO POP IN AN SHOW SOME LOVE FOR MY FAV.......... you already know about how the particular level of love you put into commons' markings is what made me fall in love with them in the first place, but it definitely bears repeating : D

still waiting on the day when I might see one in real life (I'm gonna be living near San Francisco soon, so fingers crossed it might happen!! I went on a whale watching trip a couple months ago from there - looking for gray whales. didn't see any grays, but DID see MANY harbor porpoises playing in some choppy surf instead. no regrets)

Thank you - though I can't really take credit for it of course haha. They certainly don't look 'common' at all!

You're right, they certainly don't! I'm guessing that the "Common" name is a reference to how numerous they are. With their beautiful markings, I think they could also be called "Painted Dolphins", or "Marbled Dolphins".

Yep that's exactly it. They are one of the most numerous dolphins in temperate waters, hence their name. But I think your idea of 'painted' dolphin suits them better!

I'm glad you like my "Painted Dolphin" name idea! I might well use it as a nickname for the species.

Ow thank you so, so much for your lovely comment ♥ I'm really happy to hear you've enjoyed the series so far! I had so much fun painting them, I really loved this commission. And I'm so, so grateful that SEALIFE asked me for it Being allowed to nitpick my way through every detail and marking makes me happy haha. And even happier when others enjoy it too! Oof I totally feel you - when painting common dolphins I usually change their facial markings some 5 times lol. Each time I see a new photo with different markings and go OOHH PRETTY. But well worth taking the plunge one day and just sketching from some photo refs. Soon you'll get a feel for what goes where and looking at their gorgeous markings is a reward in and of itself
