Kakashi threatened to expel them from the academy permanently. The key to the test was teamwork, but no one attempted to be the 1st to make the right move. Kakashi knew that Erza figured it out, but also knew that she thought things out. Her initial thoughts were to get Sasuke to join her, then Sakura would want to follow him, then Naruto would want to follow her. But she knew she could never get Sasuke to work together, so she scrapped the idea. She doesn’t work well with anyone either, other than Naruto.

Kakashi gave them 1 last chance to redeem themselves. They were to eat lunch & try again after, but Naruto was not allowed to eat. If anyone were to give him food, then they would all fail again. Kakashi knew Erza would definitely not listen to him, so he separated her from them. He hid behind a tree to watch the scene unfold. Erza sternly asked why he removed her. He told her to wait & watch what happens next. Erza was so confident that Sasuke & Sakura would let Naruto starve. She was shocked & confused to see Sasuke feed Naruto his lunch. Sakura followed suit & fed Naruto as well.

Kakashi took Erza with him at he jumped out of hiding & stood menacingly in front of the 4 children. Naruto, Sasuke, & Sakura were frightened at the thought of being expelled, but they stood up to him by saying that they were a team & they would not leave someone behind. Erza stood silently & watched. Kakashi then passed them, saying “Those who abandon the mission are scum, but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum.” Those words would continuously haunt Erza, contradicting everything she’s heard her entire life so far. Villagers had no problem scarring her & her brother, mentally & physically, & now, she was hearing that no man should be left behind. This was proof that the Leaf Village wasn’t scum. They were worst than it.
