Description Recently I went to Chiang Mai on a photography trip. I'm rather proud of the results.

Impact

To me, this is nothing new image wise. Placed next to the other deviations displayed in this group, it doesn't stand out to me, nor do I see any level of technique that would compare to the rest.
Sufficient lighting would have made this piece a little more successful, I think, and a properly framed/cropped photograph would make all the difference. There is an unequal balance with the leaves at the bottom of the rose that is throwing me off a bit, that should be cropped out. If you were to also attempt at making this piece centered I would suggest better cropping techniques there also (it needs a little more chopping to the right of the picture).
I scored you higher points with vision simply because the contrast of the green and pink (essentially a red) are complementary, in turn making the center of focus pop. May I remind you that having a nice camera doesn’t always promise nice photographs…Let me tell you, I have been using the shittiest camera for the longest time but I carry on just fine. To improve your skills first you must become familiar with your camera settings: Lighting, aperture, shutter speed, etc…also try taking photos from different points of view instead of a simple straight on or high/low angle shot makes a more interesting composition…maybe something like a bee’s eye view of the inside of the rose would have been interesting; people don’t find significance in photographs they can decode by simply walking past it.

Go deeper and look at life with a critical eye, learn nature’s geometry and how it can appear altered. It is imperative to shoot photos where others would snub the opportunity.

I wish you luck on your journey through growth.

Thank you for the critique of my photograph. I really do appreciate it, seeing as without it improving for me would be even more challenging.

In regards to the lighting this piece was taken in a greenhouse inside of a botanical garden in Chiang Mai on a rather cloudy day. Unfortunately I did not bring any external lights with me on the trip, so most of the photos that were taken were taken in natural lighting. I'll definitely keep in mind your advice on better lighting.

I hadn't even noticed the imbalance of the leaves at the bottom, really thanks for pointing that out. I knew that there was something within the photo that didn't quite fit but I just couldn't place my finger on what it was. Thank you very much

I understand that having a nice camera doesn't always ensure beautiful photographs. This camera is rather new to me, and all of my experience in the past with using DSLR's all happened to be Canon. Since this is a Nikon I'm still having a few issues working with changing the aperture/shutter speed mostly because I start pushing the buttons that I would on a canon without even realizing it, then I look down to see I have no idea what I've just done, hahahaha.

Given that this was a botanical garden the rose was kept a few feet away from me behind a fence, so the high straight down angle was the best shot I could get without having the chain links in the way. No excuse, but for my own peace of mind I just had to justify that, hahaha. Next time I see a flower I'll definitely try to go for a more interesting angle

Thanks very much for your critique! I've just taken a brief look at your profile as well and I see some of the pictures you take are gorgeous, so I'm very honored you took your time to write this for me.
