hm I don`t think so. I think it is more the way dolphins are. When you look at there fins it is the way whales and dolphins have and not fishes. So I don`t think they have

but dolphins and whales have blow holes to store oxygen, so in theory the mermaid must have extra lung capacity to be able to consume larger amounts of air for diving deep?

But I think there are not like fishes because in the Stories they sit on rocks as well they couldn`t if they had gills
