Description finished with the drawing/painting of the dead King in Hamlet. There is actually a lot more detail in the image... but I decided to shrink it down to like 1% of its original size so you arent viewing a 2Gb file...

I have a ton of drawings to add... BUT IM TOO BUSY!!!

30x40"

charcoal pencils
vine charcoal
powdered charcoal
arches paper
photoshop cs3

took over 17 scans to get the whole thing... ugg...

*note* As many of you have so intelligently pointed out; yes, I used the Holy Crown of Hungary as a reference for the crown in this image, however my intent was not to copy the crown exactly, hence the abolition of several details, such as the gems and pearls on the crown.

*shrugs* It was a cool looking crown that had a feel I liked, so I used it. And actually a very big reason I used the crown is that I first drew my own attempt at a crown, and the image was finished with my hideously simple crown
[link]
but after a day or two of not liking how it turned out, I knew I had to redo the crown. Luckily the picture I found of the Holy Crown of Hungary not only looked good, but was at almost the exact same perspective to sit in my hands. Lucky me!

wow, this is great. I love the play with shadows, and the mood which I find very thoughtful and sad. The king contemplating his death and what it will mean not to live anymore...
I think you've also managed to make him seem ethereal. really nice

I really like the treatment you have applied to the top half of the image and to the background.

I'm less keen on the positioning of the arms or the amount of detail in the crown. Feels like the arms aren't were they "should" be in relation to the shoulders and the crown I feel has a little too much detail.

Sorry, just being constructive. Nice work all the same.

napoleoman In reply to badstyle [2008-11-04 01:24:25 +0000 UTC]

no problem, as a middle sibling and art student I am very used to criticism, both constructive and destructive, heh. The detail in the crown might well be caused by the fact that I redrew the crown once the image was completed, because the original one just didnt work. In my naivety I thought I could create my own crown... laughable.

I think I have done better pieces, and I still feel the center is a bit unresolved, but I wanted to create an ethereal look for the King, since he either is going to die shorty or is dead already.

*shrugs* Im always trying to improve and this image had many firsts for me. Ive never used powdered charcoal like I did in this image to create large values for the background and foreground.

oh my god... This is one of the BEST artworks I've ever seen! I love the lighting effect and also the colors are perfect for this scene. I'm also fascinated of all the little color brush strokes and the details in the face, hands and crown! You created a masterpiece in my eyes and I'm sure there are many others who think the same <3

Very beautiful... it has a great light and shade in the dradients... I like that there is not a lot of details. In the mean time we get the idea really fast... and the emotions of the face of the man is fabulous...

Please give a link to the reference image for the crown. Something like:

The crown is the Holy Crown of Hungary. See [link] [link]

For the painting, the Danish crown [link] may have worked better, since Hamlet is from Denmark. Otherwise, I like the painting itself, especially the way you captured the mood. And yes, I am Hungarian, so I felt it a duty to leave this comment.
