it's not much of a constructive criticism, but...this is so epic really very impressive in more ways than one and if you have time to answer a possibly ignorant question, was this done with just those charcoal sticks or is there actually a range of thicknesses similar to traditional pencils that you used? I ask mainly because I've been thinking of trying to experiment with it a little bit, but it just seems so messy in comparison to graphite pencils that I wonder just what is it that all these talented artists (such as yourself) know that I don't.

I used charcoal pencils (usually medium or soft), as well as vine charcoal sticks and powdered charcoal. If you want to experiment with charcoal and are used to graphite pencils I would highly recommend vine charcoal as opposed to "standard" compressed charcoal. The former allows for layering and erasing, while the latter is so dark that once you put it down you are pretty much stuck with it.

I absolutely love your line work, here - especially when it comes to the creases in the man's hands and the wrinkles in his face. There's a nice balance of tight/definite and loose/gestural lines across the drawing, too. As always, your shading is excellent. I'd be interested to see the reference photo, though, as I feel as though some tight lines of detail are missing in the hat (texture-wise). Just an opinion, though. Great job.
