What about Jason Todd? I must say that since I saw Under the Red Hood, I really liked him as a character... although I do usually feel more identified with the bad guys hehehe

as i know, they both was in titans for a while (but in new 52 only Tim)
Jason... I think he's perfect as Red Hood, but as Robin... I like this character so much (especially in new 52) but not as robin)

The comic explains that since he advertantly killed Dick Grayson, Damian takes on the name Nightwing when he grows up, to honour him.

Because the plot demanded it.
It was sort of an accident, in the middle of a fight where they are on opposite sides (Damian sides with Supermans brutal approach, Dick sides with batman's less lethal version), Damian tries to take Dick down with a move he is pretty sure won't work, but because Dick is distracted, it does. Dick hits his head on a rock and dies instantly... I suspect the writer was stuck with trying to work out a way to kill Dick and just gave up trying to be taken seriously.

My idea was a bit more dramatic. It involved a battle where Damian actually killed Dick purposely before taking the mantle from him.
