In South Carolina (,based off of personal experience ), the best parts of the state are up near the Blue Ridge mountains and the Lowcountry (especially the coastline below Charleston). Greenville's in the north-western part of the state, and it's REALLY nice there. It isn't a gigantic metropolis, but it's not rinky-dinky either.
