At the first Atlanta race, Dale Earnhardt Inc. #1 driver Steve Park got injured in a practice crash and team owner Dale Earnhardt decided to give Darrell Waltrip a chance in the spotlight after decaying results the previous seasons as an owner/driver. While replacing Park, "Jaws" posted 4 top-10 finishes in 13 races including a 5th place at Fontana and a 3rd place at Pocono. That performance was good enough to make Dale Earnhardt buy off Darrell Waltrip's #17 team, thus merging both teams after the Brickyard 400. Waltrip would drive for "The Intimidator" in the last 16 races of 1998 and the entirety of 1999, his final full-time season in the Cup Series.
