Description A Glyph is, according to Webster's Dictionary, a symbol that conveys information nonverbally. Thus, I call the symbol I use to represent myself a Signature Glyph.

The first image I used to represent myself as an artist was an apple. It was back when I was a young teen, and was afraid to sign my work and put it on the net, in case someone used my name to stalk me.

Later, I used an aqua diamond, to represent a crystal (yes, Ecco the Dolphin reference there)… which quickly became three concentric diamonds, before settling into a square-and-four-triangle diamond shape, to not only retain its crystalline form, but also to incorporate the four compass points, because my influences come from all directions.

Later, I retained the now only symbolically crystalline compass points, but, I replaced the square with a swirl, an abstraction of a curled fiddlehead, representing the development of life, of ideas. However, that change had some unfortunate complications, so it is time again for me to change my Signature Glyph…

This incorporates an old symbol called the triquetra (the early pagan Germanic version of the same geometric principal is called the valknut, if people are curious). Regardless of particulars, the trefoil knot was used by early European pagan traditions, including the Norse and Celts.

However, the symbol itself has been adopted into other religions as well, including Christianity, where each point of the symbol is used to pertain to the aspects of God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In fact, it’s been a while since my Art History courses, but I believe the symbol even turns up in The Book of Kells.

Regardless, like any symbol, it can mean different things to different people, and in different contexts.

Here, I used it not only to represent my Celtic heritage, but also since it has points, it harkens back to the compass points used in earlier versions of my Glyph. In addition, because the geometric term for it, the trefoil knot, is so named because it resembles a clover, one of my favorite plants (along moss, ivy, ferns and such… the latter of which is represented by the spiral.) However, I also put a lycanthropic twist on it, using the three ‘leaves’ to represent each stage of transformation, and then I put the moon in the center.

This looks pritty cool. I could definatly see this as a simbol for a well rounded business or enviromental group.(the kind of "we all are part of a whole" thing come through)

Nice but this symbol was first used by Wiccan, it might be misread wrong by people who know it. It means "protection"

Nashoba-Hostina In reply to Death-by-Papercuts [2011-01-20 02:11:42 +0000 UTC]

You mean the triquetra portion of the glyph? Well, historically speaking, the trefoil knot was used by early European pagan traditions, including the Norse and Celts, who were around long before modern neopaganism and wicca, which, while it takes its influences from older traditions, only came around in the past century.

Actually I knew some of the pagan stuff (and Christian), not quiet in as much detail, though its apparent to me that the wiccan's use it most. Just curious as to whether you knew about this, just in case someone misinterpreted your sign.
