Actually, you know another thing she does that makes a big difference? She uses gray paper instead of white, and then adds white highlights with either paint (maybe correction fluid) or Photoshop. When your whole paper is pure white, your highlights make less of an impact than they would if your background were darker, as demonstrated here. This technique makes a huge, huge difference in the overall impact.

Adding color to a small, important bit of a black-and-white piece creates a powerful effect that pops. The strong, bold lines in the hair just come from practice and confidence.
