Description A cool wand I made. The shaft is Kingwood, and the handle is Lignum Vitae.
Lignum Vitae is the hardest kind of wood. It is also so dense that it sinks in water. And it has a wicked cool grain to it. I really like it.

That lignum looks like it'd be a pain to carve by hand...I've been wondering - how does one deal with warped grain on a lathe to prevent it from tearing?

Sharp chisels, mostly? I've had a couple LV pieces explode/tear through on me. Usually works fine though.
