A cool wand I made. The shaft is Kingwood, and the handle is Lignum Vitae.Lignum Vitae is the hardest kind of wood. It is also so dense that it sinks in water. And it has a wicked cool grain to it. I really like it.

That lignum looks like it'd be a pain to carve by hand...I've been wondering - how does one deal with warped grain on a lathe to prevent it from tearing?

Sharp chisels, mostly? I've had a couple LV pieces explode/tear through on me. Usually works fine though.
