Description
I found this Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina) wedged in the branches of a small bush a few feet from the edge of the Harpeth River. He may have been put there by a malicious person, but I think more likely he was stranded by a flood a week earlier. I extricated him from the bush and placed him in the shallows of the river; he drank for quite a while, at times completely submerging his head. He then seemed inclined to go out into the current (these box turtles are very poor swimmers) so I moved him to the bank some distance from the water's edge.
