Nicely done. Reminds me of Larry Elmore's stuff from the early 1980's.

I have been a fan of your artwork for years, I absolutely love all of your art and it's just totally amazing, I'm still trying to find one of your older art pieces of this pirate girl you've done years ago.

I know the piece you are asking about. I don't think I still have a digital file of it. It was quite some time ago when I drew that. Although you'll be amazed what you can find on the web sometimes.

Utterly astounding detail and work. Almost Elmore, but with a more realistic touch (I always thought his characters looked like they really DID belong in Dragon magazine - they didn't fit anywhere ELSE). I can see this as a PERSON, not just an image of a character concept.

Do you take commissions (and if you do, please forgive me for not looking before asking)?

I do take commissions whenever I have the time. If you are interested just send me an email and we can work something out.

I didn't consider that at the timet that I drew it, but looking at it again you might have a point. Thanks!

Nathan,

there is an impressive amount of detail on this 11x14 (not to mention your excellent shading). Are you using extremely sharp points to tackle detail? It always seems to be too small a piece of paper to me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NathanRosario In reply to Chief-Thunder [2006-03-05 18:46:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Yeah, I always have my pencil sharpener next to me to get a nice point.
But just in case try this out: built up your image. If you are drawing a character, draw the figure first and the detail second. That will help.
Also if your paper is too small you can go bigger with the size.

NathanRosario In reply to vega681j [2006-03-03 17:21:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! You know I hardly ever just use one reference pic because I never want what I do to look like its copied from a picture. So there was a couple of references I used, don't remember how many this picture is older.

A classic, beautiful pose,

Bristol board, i have to try that sometime, i see that term in many traditional deviations on dA.

NathanRosario In reply to DarkClone [2006-03-03 16:37:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Yeah Bristol board is a good quality, thick paper. You can get it smooth or vellum finished. The only thing with it is that drawings come out a little lighter than with regular drawing paper.

DarkClone In reply to NathanRosario [2006-03-03 19:32:29 +0000 UTC]

Cool, but it works like paper? Inking, painting, etc?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NathanRosario In reply to DarkClone [2006-03-03 20:23:01 +0000 UTC]

It is paper, just thicker and smoother, kinda like poster board. I think that it's great for inking, good for pencil...don't know about painting. Never used it that way. Maybe light washes if say you were mixing ink and watercolor, maybe. The pad says on the front that it's good for practicing airbrush techniques...Bristol board is not as absorbant as drawing paper. I would say don't use very watery paint.

DarkClone In reply to NathanRosario [2006-03-03 20:31:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh?, i see i see. So, id guess ink and poster colours or acrylic would be alright. Seriously, thanks for the info, i really do appreciate it,

Wow, this is quite impressive. I draw with pencil on bristol too but, mine don't come out looking so clean and awesome. What size paper do you use? I've recently been told to up my size.
Your shading is excellent and I like the details a lot too. Great job.

NathanRosario In reply to BLueStormDragoN [2006-03-01 14:26:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
For that one it's 11x14 on bristol board. Personally I have a hard time drawing smaller, I hardly ever touch 8.5x11 paper. I just can't seem to make the work fit, I always run out of space and end up having to transfer the drawing to a larger sheet. Also (if it helps) drawing on bristol board helps me maintain the detail and cuts back on smudging.

BLueStormDragoN In reply to NathanRosario [2006-03-01 18:01:20 +0000 UTC]

I used to draw very small ( I mean This small ) But I soon ran out of things to do with this size and I have been using 9x12 ever since but, I still often feel cramped. I think I use the same paper as you now, only smaller and you are right, it does hold lead better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NathanRosario In reply to BLueStormDragoN [2006-03-01 22:59:04 +0000 UTC]

Wow that is small! That's quite amazing actually. It's a skill to work that small.
Well it dosen't hurt to go bigger with the paper. If you feel cramped with what you are using now, go bigger. If when you do the picture you still have a lot of blank space left then crop the paper back. I knew this other fine artist and he would say that the paper is there to serve you, not you the paper. You do whatever you need to do to get your vision out, if the sheet is too small then put another next to it and keep going! He would say similar things about the tools artist use, like when you try to make your paints last, or maybe make some set of pencils go forever.

BLueStormDragoN In reply to NathanRosario [2006-03-04 02:17:49 +0000 UTC]

Good advice. I see what you mean and I think I know where I'll go from there: I'll go slightly bigger and move on to 11X14 soon. Thanks for the help.
