Description This pendant features a hand carved piece of catlinite better known as Minnesota pipestone. It has been carved with a design that was used by the ancient swift creek potters on pottery paddles. They carved these designs into wooden paddles which they then used to paddle the clay into bowls and jars.

The stone carving is then wrapped with copper wire. The hand made copper chain was made to echo the circles and parallel lines in the stamp design. Copper was chosen as the ancient mound builders, which the swift creek potters were part of, often used copper in their jewelry making activities. They did lots of engraving on pieces of copper which they pounded out into thin sheets. Also I think the warm color of the copper complements the color of the stone.

This piece is available in my shop at Natika's Native American Art

Love the entire piece but the chain is unique, I've not seen anything like that before.

Thanks. I wanted the chain to sort of continue the design from the carving. I like to do unusual chains it makes a piece more interesting I think.

Quite an attractive piece of work. I particularly like the chain links. Is this stone difficult to carve?

Thank you I'm glad you like it.

No catlinite is a variety of soapstone so it is quite easy to carve as stones go.

Oooo, I've only ever carved soap stone except for the one time I tried jade, failed miserably. I'll have to keep my eyes out for some, I really like the colour

Yes it is really pretty I think. Also look for seatite it is also soapstone but black. The Catlinite maybe hard for you to get if you are not Native American it is pipestone and as far as I know most of the quarry's are Native owned.

Then it would be difficult to source (I'm Australian). I've picked up some mud stone from a local beach this is grey in colour but seatite sounds excellent for a project I've had in mind for some time now, a Friesian horse with ruby eyes. I've been beach combing for a suitable black stone, the closest I've gotten is black coal which is rather brittle to carve.

Yes I think you might be able to buy seatite online if you look for it. But the shipping would be pretty expensive probably.

Where in Australia are you?

In Melbourne, I've never purchased on line before and don't particularly like the idea of it (I'm old fashioned at heart). I know of a couple of places where one can get minerals and other specimens locally I might try one of these.

Buying online opens up the world to you. But we must all follow our own paths.

I don't mind the idea of it so much it's just when I go to pick out object I what to carve, I find it requires a hands-on approach.
