Description So as cute as the Nightlights are at the end of HtTYD3 and I adore them, those of you who have watched me long enough will probably guess that the black-and-white designs kind of set off those good ol' "genetics don't work that way" bells in my head.

Basically, they shouldn't have markings like that unless the parents have the genes to have markings. Otherwise it would essentially be the equivalent of Hiccup's kids having blond hair on the right side of their heads and brunette on the left. If the designs were fan-created, I would just shrug if off...but they're canon. Now, I'm sure the designers weren't overly concerned with genetics and were going more for "something that very quickly and obviously says 'look! the black dragon and the white dragon had babies!'", but nonetheless, intended or not, the canon existence of the Nightlights with clear markings implies that Night Furies and/or Light Furies have the genes to have markings like that, they just don't happen to show up in Toothless and his mate "Nubless" (fanon name but imma use it)'s phenotypes.

It's not necessarily too far-fetched for the world either, given that Toothless and Nubless are the only specimens of their kind that we actually see in the show (minus that one shot where you can see two other Light Furies in the crowd of dragons, but I doubt the team wouldn't gone through the extra effort of retexturing a pair of dragons that are only shown for a few seconds and from a distance so w/e), as well as that the other species can have such wide color variety.Β

Now, unlike the other dragons, the dark and light coloring is set up as a breed standard for Night and Light Furies right down to the name, and as such none of them would have markings with as high a contrast as the Nightlights, but there's still some wiggle room within that. So...here's some quick little variations I designed of what other Fury specimens might look like.

Might being willing to adopt out some of the designs if people are interested but idk.

Anyways, enjoy le dergs

The variations in the coloring might also be a sign of co-dominance in the scale colors in night and light furies, kind of how multicolored cows have multiple colors.

Canonically, after movie 2 (I think?) The show had the addition of more nubblies on the night fury chin, and ACTUAL VARIATION on his flank, the coloration is slightly lighter (And probably other things like more visible scales, more bones in the face, etc.) I found a post (Somewhere in my Pinterest board) that covers this and how it matches his hidden world glowies, which proves the existence of marking variations that are simply not as visible due to the color of the dragon hides.
Its how i think the glowies work, they're placed on top of "Hidden" markings on the dragon's hides, and are simply more visible on species with more colorful hides, like how they looked on Stormfly.

I know they aren't listed as adopts, but I do see you *may* adopt them out! I'm very interested in Light Fury variation #3, how much would she be if you're willing to part with her? Points would be preferable.

Weeeell... Genetics can work that way.

Codominance is when two genes are equally dominant to each other, and so they are both expressed in full in a mosaic-like pattern (i.e. A and B blood types, splotches on cows and other animals, multiple flower colors on a plant). Night Furies and Light Furies are probably evolved enough to the point where they could be considered separate species, adapted to their own environments, so it makes sense that the two genes would be equally dominant (and dominant over any disadvantageous color).

Science jargon aside, your art is really damn good, and I love the designs you have here. You've earned a watcher.

OMG i love the name NIGHTLIGHTS for them! yassss! and anyway, yeah, you have a point. And I mean, doesn't that mean Toothless will still be the last night fury every because those other ones aren't really nightΒ furys? cuz, they have some black, but a lot of white too, so they're not pure night furys. there should have been two pure nights and one light, because there are already two other light furys.

I mean they wouldn't really be Night Furies regardless of how many of their scales were black because they're still genetically 50% Light Fury. There's more to the species' genes than the color of their scales. So yes, Toothless is the last pure Night Fury.

Theoretically we could eventually get a new species very much like the original Night Furies but it would unfortunately require many generations of inbreeding.
