In Japanese, there are a few different ways to say "I love you". One is 大好き daisuki, which translates literally to "great like". This is the most casual version and can be said about just about anything (for example, 「猫が大好き!」"I love cats!")

Another is 愛してる aishiteru, which is what you'll typically get if you type "I love you" into a translator. This phrase is taken much more seriously than daisuki and is what is said to your lover or (I think) your family.

But alternative to aishiteru is 恋してる koishiteru*. While 愛 ai refers to love in general, 恋 koi refers specifically to romance. That said, one phrase for lover/significant other/whatever is 恋人 koibito, literally "[romantically] loved person".

But these guys are Shi'vali, not people. And so, Koitarou is (sort of) Beisei's "koishi"--her romantically loved Shi'vali. But he is also literally a koi Shi...a Shi'vali with a koi-patterned coat.

*While it technically works grammatically, I don't think the phrase 'koishiteru' itself very common--I've never seen it used outside of theory. But then, my experience is not the broadest, so. Meh. 'Koibito' /is/ a thing though.
