Description
Mounted the GIANT brown bear on the form the other night. I had a terrifying moment when the hide around the lips started to disintegrate, so I couldn’t tuck the lips under the form at the back edges without pulling them off altogether. To fix the situation, I pinned a piece of plastic cut from a Gatorade bottle over the pieces. The glue on the form now holds them in place.I ran into the same issue around the eyes, so I fixed them the same way. Sadly, it means that that I’ll have to do a lot of repair work with clay when it’s dry; I’ll have to completely re-sculpt the eyelids.
Likewise, the nose didn’t fit the form correctly, so I had to do some added clay-work there. It’ll all look a LOT better once it’s been cleaned up and painted.
Lastly, the jaw set was not placed in the form correctly, so it’s a bit lopsided. This was done before I obtained the form, so it was rather beyond my control. It won’t be an easy fix, but I’m going to give it a shot.
This headdress will likely be the most impressive creation I’ve ever tackled.

Where can one obtain such a fur? I would like to use one in my arts. Anyways, amazing work, I could not do anything to mount furs, very complicated work

This one is vintage. I got it from . It's the first brown bear I've ever worked with, as brown bears are VERY hard to come by.

yes, some furs have restrictions on hunting which makes them hard to come by, haven't read on bears though. ahh, well, perhaps some day I'll find one, thank you!

I took some of the pins and such out today to see how it held up and and it looks good, so I think it'll turn out just fine.

This big guy/gal is gorgeous, even with his imperfections. Looking forward to seeing him finished. Might I ask, though..did you skin and tan this hide yourself from the animal? And if so...might I also inquire if the skull is available?

Sadly, this bear was killed, skinned, and tanned long before I was born. So I have no idea as to where her skull is.

Thanks! I've been using reference photos of a bear I know personally, who resides at a wildlife park between here and the town I attended college at. You can see him here: [link] He's the one on the left. And the Gatorade bottle thing was kind of a panic-brainstorm thing. I didn't know any other way to do it.
