Description
Teddy Anderson of Teddy Anderson Photography swung through Portland on a visit.We were originally going to spend a few hours shooting, but ended up on a photo-walk that lasted from around 2:00 until 7:00.
When he said he was planning to spend the night in his car, I offered my place for the night, so we ended up having a slumber party here with Blackjack when we were done.

Taxidermy and post-processing by me.
NOTE: Teva is a female wolf from Southeast Alaska. She was taken for population control by a friend of mine who works with the state Fish and Wildlife Department. Her pelt was already tanned when I purchased her and she was not deemed suitable for traditional taxidermy purposes. The alternative would have been to sell her on the open fur market, where her pelt would have been cut up and made into clothing.

I love your workmanship. It is really beautiful. I don't know why people get so upset about it. Better for the spirit of that animal to be honored and respected through spiritual practices than cut up for 'fashion' and mundanely worn. I was wondering if you knew good places to look for furs that were legally culled for population control and such. I don't know where to look.

Vintage and antique stores are the best places to find furs. If you're lucky to live in a big city like me, you may also find some auction houses for estates liquidations.

Wolves in my home state of Oregon are only overpopulated in certain locations, and they are closely-regulated. In Alaska, where this wolf came from, they are heavily overpopulated and causing destruction to the environment, so the cull is necessary. A lot of time and research goes into deciding if a population needs to be thinned-out or encouraged to grow in order to keep balance. Most people don't know that.

The only thing horrible about this is to think that the wolf's pelt would have gone to waste if not made into a functional piece of art. If you have time to waste making idiotic judgements about something you didn't even take the time to read about, then you certainly have time to ask questions before accusing this of being "horrible".

Humans are not overpopulated. That's a common myth shared by people with a minimal understanding of population growth. Humans numbers are not the issue (however, our rate of consuption of resources is) If you take any courses on ecology in college, you'll eventually learn that. Native Americans are not the only people to use furs, bows, and wear body paint. My European ancestors did the same things. The fact that you discredit European use of pelts, bows, and body paint and automatically assume that this must be "Native" says a lot about you. Fur =/= Native Americans. Bows =/= Native Americans. Body paint =/= Native Americans. Educate yourself before you run around trying to play the part of appropriation police.
